
Kernels drop fifth in a row in 5-3 loss to Burlington

BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Kernels dropped their fifth game in a row with a 5-3 loss to the Burlington Bees on Thursday evening at Community Field. The Kernels scored first in the third inning. With the bases loaded Rolando Gomez's RBI sacrifice fly to right field plated Brian Hernandez, giving the Kernels a 1-0 lead against Bees starter Nate Long.
The Bees took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning off of Kernels starter Jairo Diaz. With the bases loaded Josh Whitaker singled to right field, scoring Royce Consigli and John Hester. The Kernels tied the game 2-2 in the sixth inning. Gomez tripled and came home to score on a RBI sacrifice fly by Randal Grichuk.
Burlington scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking a 5-2 lead. Back to back doubles by Nino Leyja and Whitaker scored one run. Diaz was then replaced by Kernels reliever Beau Brooks on the mound. Brooks balked with Whitaker at third to give the Bees a two run advantage. A.J. Kerby-Jones homered to left later in the inning, extending the Bees lead to three.
Diaz (0-1) went five innings and allowed four runs on four hits. He struck out four and walked five. Brooks went 0.2 inning and allowed one run on one hit while striking out one and walking one. The Kernels cut into the Burlington lead with a single run in the eighth inning. Jean Almanzar doubled with one out, and Travis Witherspoon followed with a RBI double to plate Almanzar and cut the Bees lead to 5-3. Donn Roach pitched 2.1 innings in relief for the Kernels, allowing no runs on one hit. He struck out three and walked two.
Long (7-6) picked up the win for the Bees. He went seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one. Max Peterson allowed one run in 0.2 inning of work. Blake Treinen recorded his second save, going 1.1 innings and allowing no runs on one hit.
The Kernels conclude the commuter series at Burlington on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. The Kernels return home on Saturday evening at 5:05 p.m. It will be Jimmy Buffett Night as the Cedar Island Band will perform after the game. Fans can enjoy a spectacular fireworks show after the Cedar Island Band performance.
