Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars fell behind, 5-0, right away on Friday night and never fully recorded. They lost, 7-4, to the Beloit Snappers and committed five errors in front of a crowd of 11,123 at Elfstrom Stadium while dropping two out of three in the series. With 17 games left in the regular season, the Cougars still hold a multiple-game lead for the Western Division's top 2nd Half playoff spot.
Starter Jason Adam (5-8) had given up one earned run in 19 innings over his three previous appearances against Beloit but yielded seven runs -- four earned -- on seven hits in three innings Friday in the loss. He walked one and fanned three and never recovered from a five-run first inning that included three Cougars errors and three unearned runs.
The Cougars responded in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs. Geulin Beltre grounded out to plate Angel Franco, who had tripled, and Brian Fletcher launched an opposite-field solo homer, his 12th. But Beloit scored two more in the third for a 7-2 game and never looked back. Fletcher's second homer of the night -- a solo job in the seventh -- made it, 7-3, and his RBI double in the ninth got it to, 7-4, but that became the final.
The Cougars got five shutout innings from Jason Mitchell and one from Cole White to give the offense a chance, but the Cougars totaled only five hits in the contest, and two of those came in the opening frame. A.J. Achter (4-6) struck out 13 batters over seven innings in the win for the Snappers (25-28, 63-60).
The Cougars (31-22, 59-63) start a seven-game road trip Saturday night at 6 CT with the opener of a four-game series against the Clinton LumberKings (28-24, 52-70). Leondy Perez (6-11, 3.35) is scheduled to face Roenis Elias (2-0, 2.89). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 5:45 p.m.
