Kalamazoo Wings Week In Review For the Week of February 24th- March 2nd

Record Last Week: 1-1-1 Overall Record 21-31-8

Game Rewind The K-Wings hit the ice three times last week. Kalamazoo started the week on Wednesday (2/19), as they hosted the Fort Wayne Komets. Kalamazoo started the games scoring just 2:40 into the opening period when Pat O'Leary extended his 3 game scoring streak with his 8th goal of the season. Fort Wayne would get the equalizer later in the period, when Kevin Bertram scored on the power play to the tie the game at 1-1. The score would remain tied until the early minutes on the second period, when Michael Ford broke tie with his 6th goal of the year just 53 seconds into the period. Just like before, the Komets found a way to tie the game, as Ron Baker scored his first goal of the year to tie the game at 2-2. From there, the K-Wings would swing momentum for good at 13:34 into the period, when referee Mike Mondalek award a penalty shot to Kalamazoo after a Komet play cover his hand on the puck in the Fort Wayne crease. K-Wings Head Coach Paul Pickard summand Tyson Turgeon to take the shot for the K-Wings; Tyson deliver with the UHL's first penalty shot goal of the season, the goal was also Turgeon's 4th of the season. 41 seconds after Turgeon made the score 3-2 Kalamazoo, O'Leary added his second of the game to extend the K-Wings lead to 4-2. Fort Wayne added a goal midway in the third period, but it wouldn't be enough as Kalamazoo won the game 4-3, extending their winning streak to 2 games.

The K-Wings continued their home stand on Friday (2/21), as they hosted the Missouri River Otters Kalamazoo started the games scoring in the opening period, when Peter Roed found Charlie Elezi in the slot for Elezi's third goal of the season less then three minutes into the game. Missouri would answer back midway in the period, when Dustin Whitecotton scored on a deflection to tie the game at 1-1. The score remained tied at 1-1 until the second period, when Mark Vilneff broke the deadlock with a power play goal 8:31 into the second period. The goal was Vilneff's first of the year. Missouri grabbed the games next two goals, to take a 3-2 lead. First it was Joey Bastien scoring on the power play to even the score at 2-2, and then J.P Beilstein scored on a breakaway to give the River Otters their lead of the game. Missouri hung onto the 1 goal lead until the third period, when Shawn Roed scored on a one-timer from the slot to knot the game at 3-3 at the 12:44 mark of the third period. The game eventually went to a shootout, where both teams went 9 shooters deep, but it would be Charlie Blyth giving the Otters the eventual winning goal, as Missouri out scored the K-Wings 2-1 in the shootout to win the game 4-3. The shootout loss snapped the K-Wings winnings streak at 2 games, but extends their unbeaten streak to 3 games. With the shootout win, Missouri snaps their franchise record 8 game winless streak.

Kalamazoo finished off the week their third consecutive home game on Saturday (2/22), as the Port Huron Beacons paid a visit to Wings Stadium. The Beacons started the games scoring when John Vary scored from the right point 1:08 into the game. The K-Wings tied the game late in the opening period, when Peter Roed tallied his 200th career point on his 18th goal of the season to make the score 1-1. Port Huron took the lead for good midway in the second period, when Michel Beausoleil capitalized on a K-Wings turnover and scored on a break to give the Beacons a 2-1 lead. The 2-1 score would hold throughout the remainder of the second period, as well as the third, as the Beacons defeated Kalamazoo by the final of 2-1.

Fast Forward The K-Wings get ready for their playoff push with three games this week. Kalamazoo will continued their four game home stand on Wednesday (2/26) as they host the Muskegon Fury. On the season, the K-Wings are 1-6-2 against the Fury this season. Muskegon enters the game atop of the Western Conference Standings. Kalamazoo begins play this week just 8 points behind Flint and 7 points behind Rockford for the last playoff spot in the UHL.

After spending four straight games at Wings Stadium, the K-Wings will get back on the road for a brief one game trip to Moline, Illinois, to battle the Quad City Mallards (2/28). Home ice has played a big part in his series this year. In 5 previous meetings, the home team has won each game. Kalamazoo leads the season series with a record of 3-2-0; however, Quad City still leads the all-time series with a record of 10-15-1.

Kalamazoo finishes off the week back at Wings Stadium, as they play host to the Missouri River Otters on Sunday, (3/1). This will be the third meeting in less then 2 weeks between the teams. On the season, Kalamazoo leads the season series over the River Otters with a record of 5-2-3. This will be the last visit by Missouri in the regular season, however, the two teams will face-off once more in Missouri on the last day of the regular season.

3 Games and Counting Defensemen Mark Vilneff is heating things up on the frozen floors. Vilneff is on a three game point streak. In his last 3 games, Vilneff has tallied 1 goal and 2 assists.

Roed Reaches Milestone In the K-Wings game last Saturday (2/22), forward Peter Roed reach a personal milestone. Roed recorded his 200th career point on a goal against Port Huron. In 348 games, Roed has scored 89 goals and assisted on 111.

Yannick Nears Milestone While, Peter Roed reach a personal milestone, forward Yannick Carpentier is nearing one.. Yannick is just one point away from reaching 100 points for his career.

Carpentier on the Radio Join special guest Yannick Carpentier, as he joins General Manager/Head Coach Paul Pickard and the "Voice of the K-Wings" Mike Modugno on "K-Wings Live". The show is on The Sports Station 1600 AM WQSN Tuesday's from 6:30-7PM at Gallagher's Eatery on Stadium Drive.

The Obscure Stat of the Week In most cases, K-Wing fans can tell after the 2nd period if their K-Wings will win the team just by looking at the scoreboard after the second period. This season, Kalamazoo is 12-2-2 when carrying a lead into the third period.
