Johnstown Chiefs News Release


The Johnstown Chiefs (21-29-8; 50 PTS; 5th NW div.) played three games last week, losing all of them. This week the Chiefs will play three games in three nights with a road game against Lexington on Friday, and home games Saturday night vs. Wheeling, and Sunday afternoon against Dayton. The Chiefs trail 3rd place Lexington and Cincinnati by 10 points for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northwest division. The Chiefs have fourteen games left in the regular season (eight home, six road.)

GAME #56 (2/19/03) TOLEDO 4 – Johnstown 3 Hildenbrand two assists

The Johnstown Chiefs came up short Wednesday night at Toledo when they fell 4-3 to the Storm. Dmitri Tarabrin, Jim Leger, and Phil Roy all scored for the Chiefs. Goaltender Mark Scally made 29 saves in the game. The Chiefs out shot the Storm 37-33. Erik Anderson had a goal and an assist for the Storm.

GAME #57 (2/21/03) Trenton 6 – JOHNSTOWN 1 Mather 1st goal with Chiefs

The Trenton Titans scored six consecutive goals, en route to a 6-1 win over the Johnstown Chiefs Friday night at the War Memorial. Shawn Mather scored the lone Chiefs goal in his first game with the team. Peter Aubry allowed all six Trenton goals, and made 25 saves in the contest. Mike Hurley and Matt Zultek each had a pair of goals for Trenton.

GAME #58 (2/22/03) Toledo 4 – JOHNSTOWN 2 Smital 106th Career Goal

The Johnstown Chiefs played their 1,000th East Coast Hockey League game Saturday night, but fell 4-2 to the Toledo Storm in front of a standing room only crowd of 4,074 at the War Memorial. Chiefs right wing Lukas Smital scored in the second period, tying him with Bruce Coles as the Chiefs all-time leading goal scorer. Sam St. Pierre also tallied for Johnstown their third straight loss. Wes Mason had a pair of goals for Toledo, while Brandon Fleenor and Timo Helbling also scored. Chiefs goaltender Peter Aubry suffered the loss making 32 saves, while Storm goaltender Doug Teskey made 39 saves for his 21st win of the season.

The Chiefs and the Lexington Men O'War (27-24-6; 60 PTS, 4th NW div.) meet for the seventh time this season Friday night at Lexington's Rupp Arena. The Chiefs are 2-2-2 against the MOW this season. Lexington has out scored the Chiefs 19-17. Lexington is 18-8-3 at home this season and is 5-4-1 in their last ten games. The MOW play at Richmond on Wednesday night, at Pee Dee on Thursday night, and return home to face the Chiefs on Friday. The MOW will travel 1,301 miles this week prior to playing the Chiefs.

Saturday night the Chiefs will host the Wheeling Nailers (21-30-3; 45 PTS; 7th NW div.). This will seventh of nine games this season between the two teams. The Chiefs are 2-3-1 against the Nailers this season. The Nailers have out scored the Chiefs 15-12 this season. Wheeling is currently in last place in the Northwest division, and are 5-5-0 in their last ten games.

Sun. Mar. 2 vs. Dayton Bombers 2:30 p.m.

The Chiefs and the Dayton Bombers (19-28-9; 47 PTS, 6th NW div.) face-off for the ninth and final time this season, Sunday afternoon at the War Memorial. The Chiefs are 6-1-1 against the Bombers this season and 3-0-0 at the War Memorial. Dayton is currently in 6th place in the Northwest division and are winless in their last six games (0-5-1). Dayton is just 7- 14-5 on the road this season.

CHIEFS NOTES:

- Lukas Smital is tied with Bruce Coles as the Chiefs all-time leading goal scorer (106).
- Saturday night's standing room only crowd was the Chiefs first sellout since 12/31/98 vs. Chesapeake (4,063), and their largest crowd since 11/28/97 vs. Pee Dee (4,107).
- The Chiefs are winless in their last four home games (0-3-1).
- The Chiefs are 14-22-5 within the division.
