K-Wings Score Three in Second But Gladiators Prevail
December 19, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - The Kalamazoo Wings scored three second period goals and battled back from a two goal deficit, but the Atlanta Gladiators downed the Wings, 5-3, on Bell's Brewery night at Wings Event Center.
Much like the night before, Atlanta jumped out to the early 1-0 lead. Fresh off a penalty kill, Kalamazoo failed to clear their zone and Max Everson let loose a rocket from the left side of the blue line that hit a stick in front and bounced over the pad of Clay Witt.
The Gladiators pushed their lead to 2-0 late in the first period, courtesy of Gary Nunn. Receiving a Thomas Frazee pass in the high slot, Nunn ripped a one-timer past the outstretched glove of Witt.
Using the fresh ice to their advantage, the Wings cut their deficit to one goal, just 2:12 into the middle frame. Ludwig Blomstrand utilized his speed to create a two-on-one break and found Dane Fox at the mouth of the goal crease for Fox's eighth marker of the campaign.
Wasting no time to push their lead back to two, the Gladiators answered just 13 seconds later. Following a faceoff win at center ice, Patrick D'Amico carried the puck into Kalamazoo's zone, found a soft spot in the slot, and blasted a wrister past Witt.
Kalamazoo continued to push the pace, earning an offensive faceoff and not letting it go to waste. Alex Mallet cleanly won the draw back to Adam Phillips at the right point, and Phillips used his booming shot to notch his fifth of the season.
Completing the comeback, Tanner Sorenson knocked home his sixth of the season to tie the game at three. Fox took the puck off the right side boards and pushed a shot on net that was stopped by Atlanta goalie Kent Patterson, but the rebound found the stick of Sorenson, whose turnaround wrister trickled through the pads of Patterson.
Generating the majority of the scoring chances early in the final frame, Atlanta regained the lead. D'Amico found empty ice in front of Witt and snuck the puck over the far shoulder of the Kalamazoo net minder.
Atlanta continued to carry the play and were rewarded for their hard work in the third. Tyler Murovich came from behind the Kalamazoo net and lifted a wrister over the shoulder of Witt, who was screened on the play, to cap off the scoring for the night.
Notes: Fox leads the Wings with eight goals. Kalamazoo enters the league-wide holiday break, and won't return to action until next Saturday, December 26, at Fort Wayne. For the fifth time this season, Kalamazoo outshot their opponent. Tyler Shattock left the game after the first period and didn't return.
