Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Two goals scored by the Norfolk Admirals in the opening frame was enough to keep the Adirondack Thunder from winning back-to-back games at Norfolk Scope Arena.

Norfolk was first on the board during a two-on-one rush early in the opening frame. Steven Whitney passed the puck from the top of the left circle through the slot. The feed missed the stick of Adirondack defenseman Mathieu Brodeur and reached Admirals blueliner Nick Pageau. He guided a wrist shot into the top shelf of Adirondack netminder Ken Appleby's net at 3:43 to put Norfolk up 1-0.

The lead doubled near the halfway point of the first. Pageau netted his second of the first frame after Whitney dropped the puck behind him in the slot of the Thunder's zone. Pageau quickly snapped a shot that rose over Appleby's blocker and lit the lamp at 9:05 for the 2-1 lead.

Adirondack got one back at 16:15 of the first when goals leader Michael Kirkpatrick emerged from his zone and knocked it ahead to Ben Johnson at the Admirals' blue line. Johnson's wrist shot from the left circle hit Norfolk goaltender Adam Courchaine's pads. As Courchaine reached to cover up the puck, Kirkpatrick beat him to it and elevated an attempt into the Norfolk cage. The Admirals left the ice at the end of the first period in the lead, 2-1.

A scoreless 40 minutes followed, and the Admirals defeated the Thunder, 2-1.

Courchaine saved 34 out of 35 of the Thunder's attempts on net, while Adirondack's Appleby blocked 26 out of 28. For the first time all season, the Admirals participated in a contest that was completely devoid of penalties.

Norfolk will head out for a four game road-trip starting on Sunday, December 26 against the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:05 p.m.
