Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI- Backstopped by a 34-save shutout performance by Joel Martin, the Kalamazoo Wings defeated the Brampton Beast, 4-0, Friday night at Wings Event Center.
The Wings needed just over a half-minute to generate a lead. While killing off a Ben Wilson penalty, Lane Scheidl stole the puck at the Brampton blue line creating a two-on-one with Justin Taylor. Scheidl fed a cross-ice feed to the tape of Taylor, who buried the shorthanded attempt.
The special teams kept the scoring going throughout the first period for Kalamazoo. While operating on a five-on-three power play opportunity, Tyler Shattock drove hard to the net causing Brampton goalie Andy Iles to move out of position. David Gilbert found the loose puck and buried it into the open net for his fourth of the season.
Just 33 seconds later, Gilbert extended the Kalamazoo lead to 3-0. Continuing to buzz through the offensive zone, Cory Prtiz left the puck for Gilbert in the slot, whose shot snuck through a web of bodies in front, and into the goal.
A scoreless second period gave way to a quick strike from the Wings in the third. Just 1:37 into the final frame, Eric Kattelus held the puck behind the net where he generated enough space to find Ludwig Blomstrand in the slot to cap the scoring for the night.
Notes: Martin earned his 23rd professional shutout. Kalamazoo's record is now 1-2-0-0 against Brampton on the season. Colin Chaulk made his first appearance at Wings Event Center as an opposing team's head coach after spending two seasons in Kalamazoo as an assistant.
