Norfolk Admirals News Release
GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The Norfolk Admirals poured in four goals in the third period to defeat the Adirondack Thunder 6-1 Friday night at Glens Falls Civic Center.
After a scoreless first 20 minutes, Jonathan Lessard put the Admirals on the board first with a wrister from the top of the right circle at 1:04. Adirondack goalie Ken Appleby appeared to lose his footing in the crease as Lessard's first shot was blocked at the release point. Lessard quickly sent a second effort towards a flustered Appleby and the puck coasted through his legs for the 1-0 lead.
Adirondack tied the score at 9:55 of the second on a shot from defenseman Jeff Silengo from the right point. Silengo's shot appeared to be tipped by Dana Fraser right in front of Norfolk netminder Adam Courchaine, but nonetheless Fraser provided a distraction as the puck darted past the Admirals goalie making his Norfolk debut.
Michael Pelech snatched the lead back for Norfolk with exactly five minutes remaining in the second period. Jordan Hill emerged from a tie-up in front of the benches to spring a three-on-one, which Pelech finished with a one-timer from below the hash marks at 15:00 to make it a 2-1 game going to the third period.
The final period was all Norfolk as the lead ballooned to 4-1 after only two minutes. On the rush, Scott Allen led Alexis Loiseau with a pass into the slot and Loiseau turned to his backhand before gently sliding the puck between Appleby's pads with only 33 seconds elapsed.
One minute and 28 seconds later, Loiseau returned the favor to Allen in transition. Allen flipped a backhander beneath Appleby's arms and off the crossbar, redirecting down to the crease and off a skate. The puck bounced off the boot and over the goal line to award Norfolk a commanding 4-1 advantage.
The mountain only got steeper for the Thunder following Allen's goal. Radoslav Illo's snipe with 10:47 left made it 5-1, and Tommy Mele's team-leading eighth goal confirmed the rout at 12:10 of the third. Norfolk tallied six goals for the second time this season to hand Adirondack its first home loss this season, 6-1.
Courchaine saved 28 of 29 Thunder shots while Appleby turned aside 15 of 20 shots he faced. Drew Fielding relieved Appleby and allowed Mele's goal on five shots in 10:47 of work. The Admirals netted a power-play goal for the sixth straight game and held Adirondack in each of its four opportunities.
Elmira awaits the Admirals Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. in the fourth of the current five-game road trip. Listen on 1650 AM WHKT or watch live on ECHL.TV
