Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs walked off over the Gwinnett Braves, 7-6, on Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The Chiefs completed a five-run comeback and defeated the Braves on a walkoff, pinch-hit single by Josh Johnson.
Gwinnett (45-47) jumped out early and often against Syracuse starter Taylor Hill with a five-run first inning. Mallex Smith led off the frame with a bunt single down the third-base line. With Jose Peraza at the plate, Smith stole second base. Then, Peraza singled to left field to put runners on the corners with no outs. Christian Bethancourt drove in the game's first run with an RBI single to right field. With runners on first and third, Adonis Garcia followed with a single to right to plate Peraza to give the Braves a 2-0 lead. The next batter, Cedric Hunter, reached base on a fielding error by second baseman Ricky Hague and advanced to second base on a throwing error by Hague. Bethancourt scored on the fielding error and Garcia moved to third on the throwing error by Hague. Two batters later, Mycal Jones singled to center to plate the final two Braves' runs in the inning to cap off the five-run first.
Syracuse (37-47) got one back in the bottom of the first inning against Gwinnett starter Tyrell Jenkins. Darin Mastroianni led off the inning with an infield single that hit off of Jenkins' leg and rolled softly to the second baseman Peraza. Trea Turner followed with a walk to put the first two runners on for Syracuse. Jason Martinson followed with a fielder's choice to the shortstop Daniel Castro, who forced out Turner at second. With a 3-2 count on Kevin Keyes, Martinson stole second base as Keyes struck out. The second baseman Peraza committed a catching error at second, which allowed Mastroianni to score from first and put the Chiefs on the board.
The Chiefs closed the deficit to two in the bottom of the third inning. Martinson led off the frame with a double into the right-center field gap. The next batter, Keyes, lined a single to left field, but the ball was hit too sharply so Martinson held at third. Then, Hague drove in the second Chiefs' run with an RBI single to right field. Two batters later, Dan Butler closed the deficit to two with an RBI fielder's choice to third base. Garcia threw to second to force out Ramsey and the deficit was cut to 5-3.
Martinson muscled the Chiefs to within a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Leading off the inning, the Syracuse third baseman lined an opposite-field home run to right-center. Martinson's team leading 15th home run pulled the deficit to 5-4 after five innings.
Syracuse snatched the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runs against Gwinnett reliever Greg Smith. Keyes led off the inning with a line-drive single to center field. With Ramsey batting and one out, Keyes moved to second on a balk by Smith. Then, Ramsey singled to right field to put runners at the corners for the Chiefs. Butler stepped up and grounded a ball to third. Garcia fielded and threw to second, but Peraza committed a catching error to allow all runners to be safe. Keyes scored from third to tie the game at five. The next batter, Tony Gwynn, Jr. lined a double down the right-field line to plate Ramsey to give Syracuse its first lead of the game.
The Braves tied the game the very next half-inning against Paul Demny. With one out, Adonis Garcia singled on a line drive in front of Gwynn. With Cedric Hunter at the plate, Demny surrendered a wild pitch to allow Garcia to move to second. Then, Hunter singled to left field to tie the game at six.
Syracuse walked off in the bottom of the ninth with a pinch-hit single by Johnson. After Carlos Fisher retired the first two Chiefs hitters, Butler drew a walk. Gwynn followed with a walk of his own to put runners on first and second. Then, Johnson singled to center field to walk off Gwinnett and give Syracuse a 7-6 win.
Syracuse seeks a series win Saturday against Gwinnett. The Chiefs throw A.J. Cole against Mike Foltynewicz for the Braves. The game is set to start at 7:05 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
