Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs blanked the Rochester Red Wings 1-0 Friday night at Frontier Field.
The teams meet again Saturday night at 6:05 p.m, with the gates opening at 5 p.m. Country star Jon Pardi will perform a post-game concert after the fireworks show; complete promotion details below...
The Red Wings and left-hander Pat Dean got their first taste of Lehigh Valley starter Jesse Biddle on Friday night. Dean's only other appearance against Lehigh Valley was a no-decision on July 6 at Frontier Field.
Dean got some support from his defense in the early going. In the first, Danny Ortiz made a diving grab to prevent the leadoff base hit. Dean also helped his own cause, making a grab at a grounder hit solidly up the middle to record the first out in the third.
Biddle got into a groove in the second inning after allowing a walk in the first, striking out the side for the IronPigs.
Doug Bernier recorded the first hit of the game for the Wings in the third, a one out single. Two batters later, James Beresford reach base on a base hit, advancing Bernier to third base and putting him into scoring position. The runners would be stranded on the corners, however, as Jose Martinez popped into the inning-ending out.
The IronPigs got on the board in the fourth inning after a Jordan Danks single scored Aaron Altherr from second, putting the Wings down 1-0. With runners on first and second and two outs, Dean was able to compose himself and strike out the next batter to get out of the inning.
Dean found himself in some more trouble in the fifth inning, allowing consecutive base hits to start off the inning. With runners on first and second and no outs, the Wings defense came to the rescue, delivering a double play, but advancing the remaining base runner to third. Once again despite the troubles, Dean was able to gather himself and deliver an inning-ending strikeout stranding a runner in scoring position.
In the sixth, the Wings were able to get their first base runner since the third inning after a throwing error by Biddle allowed Beresford to reach. Martinez knocked his first base hit of the night, putting Beresford into scoring position at second. After a pop out in foul territory by Reynaldo Rodriguez, Ortiz came to the plate looking for his first hit of the night, but came up short grounding into the inning-ending force out.
Biddle (1-0) made his exit after seven strong innings, a nice recovery following his previous outing, his first in Triple-A, in which he surrendered five hits and seven runs in just 2 1/3 innings pitched against Pawtucket. Biddle pitched seven innings, gave up three hits, one walk, and struck out seven. He threw 100 pitches, 61 for strikes.
Juan Gutierrez took over in relief of Biddle and allowed a Jorge Polanco base hit with one out in the inning. That was all the Wings could get going, as Beresford grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Dean continued to pitch well into the eighth inning. Despite allowing a leadoff single, Dean was able to retire the next three batters he faced, striking out the last two.
Despite not being in a position for the win, Dean (6-8) pitched well in eight innings, giving up seven hits, one run, one walk, and striking out seven. Dean threw 109 pitches, 76 for strikes.
Mark Hamburger worked one inning of relief for the Wings, a seven-pitch, one-two-three inning in the ninth.
The IronPigs bullpen worked two innings, allowing only one hit, with Adam Loewen picking up the save, his sixth of the season.
The Wings were out-hit 7-4.
NOTES: Hot-hitting Oswaldo Arcia struck out three times against Jesse Biddle...Pat Dean has now pitched into the 7th inning in nine of his 17 starts this season.
