Gwinnett Stripers News Release

SYRACUSE, NY - Pinch hitter Josh Johnson drove a single to center field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning scoring Dan Butler from second to lead the Syracuse Chiefs (37-57) to a come-from-behind 7-6 win over the Gwinnett Braves (45-47) Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium.

The winning hit by Johnson came off Gwinnett reliever Carlos Fisher (L, 1-4) just when it looked as if the game would go to extra frames. After pitching a perfect bottom of the eighth, Fisher had recorded the first two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but then walked Butler and Tony Gwynn, Jr. to set up the winning hit by Johnson.

The game began as if the G-Braves would run away and hide from Syracuse and starting pitcher Taylor Hill. Mallex Smith led off with a bunt single, stole second and moved to third on a single to left by Jose Peraza. Christian Bethancourt singled to right, scoring Smith for a 1-0 lead. Adonis Garcia followed with another single to right, scoring Peraza for a 2-0 advantage. Bethancourt, who moved to third on the play, then scored as Syracuse second baseman Ricky Hague dropped a ground ball hit by Cedric Hunter. Mycal Jones added a two-run single to center scoring both Garcia and Hunter for a 5-0 lead.

Gwinnett starting pitcher Tyrell Jenkins was touched for a unearned run in the bottom of the first as with two outs and runners on the corners, Bethancourt's throw to second trying to catch Jason Martinson stealing was dropped by Peraza, enabling Darin Mastroianni to score from third to cut the G-Braves' lead to 5-1.

The lead narrowed to 5-3 in the bottom of the third when the Chiefs got to Jenkins for two runs, one on an RBI single by Hague and the other when Butler hit into a fielder's choice with a man on third.

In the bottom of the fifth, Martinson closed the gap to one run at 5-4 when he led off the inning with a solo homer to right-center off Jenkins.

The Chiefs caught and passed Gwinnett in the bottom of the seventh. With Greg Smith pitching, one out and runners on the corners, Butler hit a ground ball to Garcia at third, who threw to second to start what should have been an inning-ending double play. Peraza dropped the ball at second, enabling Kevin Keyes to score from third to tie the game at 5-5. Gwynn then doubled to right, scoring Caleb Ramsey from second to give Syracuse its first lead at 6-5.

But the G-Braves quickly tied the game in the top of the eighth as Garcia punched a one-out single to left off Syracuse reliever Paul Demny, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on single to left by Hunter to make it 6-6.

Jenkins pitched 4.0 innings with six hits, four runs (three earned), four walks and two strikeouts. Ryan Weber went 2.0 innings with two hits and two strikeouts. Smith worked 1.0 inning with three hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk. Fisher was tagged for the loss by going 1.2 innings with one hit, one earned run, two walks and three strikeouts.

Hill pitched 5.0 innings with seven hits, five runs (four earned) and three strikeouts for Syracuse. P.J. Walters worked 1.0 inning. Rafael Martin went 1.0 inning with one hit. Demny pitched 0.2 of an inning with two hits and one earned run. Eric Fornataro (W, 1-4) worked 1.1 innings.

Garcia led Gwinnett with a 2-for-4 night including two runs and one RBI. Jones was also 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Smith was 2-for-5 with a run.

For Syracuse, Martinson was 2-for-5 with two runs and a solo homer, his 15th of the season. Keyes and Mastroianni were each 2-for-4.

The G-Braves and Chiefs meet in game three of the four-game series Saturday night in Syracuse. Right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (1-5, 3.15) will start for Gwinnett. The Chiefs will counter with right-hander A.J. Cole (1-4, 3.91). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Tony Schiavone has the call beginning at 6:30 p.m. on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com.
