Hens' Offense Stumbles as Indy Takes Game Two
July 17, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Toledo Mud Hens and Indianapolis Indians took to the field on a muggy Friday night in the second game of their four game set. Toledo carried their 40-52 record into the ballgame looking to snap their three game losing streak that extended back before the All-Star break. Taking the mound at the Hen house for the home team was southpaw Kyle Ryan, still looking to earn his first Mud Hens win of the season. The lefty came into Friday with a home record of 0-4, with an opponents' batting average of .307 in Ryan's 36.0 innings pitched at Fifth Third Field.
The first place Indians took advantage of the lefty's 2015 struggles at home as they kicked off their offensive attack in the third with an Alen Hanson RBI groundout, scoring Tony Sanchez. Keon Broxton followed the run with an RBI single of his own, scoring Hanson as Indy batted around the lineup in the third. After a soft RBI single from Willy Garcia the Indians took their 3-1 lead into the third looking to add on.
The pesky offense padded their lead off Ryan once again in the fourth as Tony Sanchez doubled to center, bringing around Steve Lombardozzi. Sanchez led the way for the Indy offense with a 3-4 night at the plate. Ryan exited after 6.2 innings, allowing four runs on ten hits with five strikeouts. Willy Garcia topped off the Indy offense on the evening with a two-run home run off Jeff Ferrell in the top of the ninth.
It was another quiet night for the Hens' offense as a first innning run was all they could muster up off Indians' starter Adrian Sampson. Mike Hessman was the recipient of the run batted in, as he grounded into a forceout at second, scoring Josh Wilson. Sampson earned the victory going six strong, surrendering just one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
The Hens had some unfamiliar faces man the left side of their infield on Friday night, as Mike Hessman was at the hot corner while Josh Wilson roamed the shortstop position. Wilson's appearance came after Dixon Machado, who's played a majority of the games at short for the Hens (79), was called up Thursday due to Detroit's Marc Krauss being placed on the paternity list. Mike Hessman gave the Hens' faithful flashbacks of old at third base, as he made several spectacular plays at his old position. Friday was Hessman's first start at third since May 1st vs. Gwinnett.
The Hens and Indians are back in action Saturday night starting at 7:00pm at Fifth Third Field.
