JACKSONVILLE, F.L. - Despite two-run home runs from both Peyton Burdick and Norel González, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell 8-5 to the Nashville Sounds Saturday night in front of 7,952 fans at 121 Financial Ballpark.
Jacksonville (20-15) led 3-2 through four frames, but Nashville (23-11) used a four-run fifth inning to turn the game on its head. Mario Feliciano led off with a single and went to second on a groundout by Alex Jackson. With a runner on second, Andruw Monasterio singled and stole second. Jonathan Davis walked to load the bases and Feliciano scored on a bases loaded walk by Brice Turang to tie the game at three. In the following at-bat, Weston Wilson knocked a single to score Monasterio from third to give Nashville a 4-3 advantage. Jacksonville starter Edward Cabrera (L, 1-1) struck out the next batter he faced but exited the game with two outs in the fifth inning. Jeff Brigham replaced Cabrera and surrendered a two-run single to the first batter he faced, Mark Mathias, giving Nashville a 6-3 advantage.
The Jumbo Shrimp cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh. Willians Astudillo reached on an error to start the inning and then scored on a two-run home run (5) by Norel González to bring Jacksonville to within one, 6-5.
The Sounds added insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, Jackson walked and advanced to third on a double by Monasterio. A wild pitch scored Jackson, increasing the Nashville lead to 7-5. Monasterio advanced to third and then scored on another wild pitch, giving the Sounds an 8-5 advantage.
Jacksonville couldn't mount any offense, as they were held scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings.
Nashville broke through first on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Davis started the inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout by Turang. During the at-bat of Wilson, Davis scored on a balk, giving the Sounds a 1-0 lead.
Jacksonville took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Lorenzo Quintana singled and scored on a two-run home run (6) by Burdick, giving the Jumbo Shrimp a 3-1 advantage.
The Sounds were able to cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Mathias walked and scored on a double by Pablo Reyes, making the tally 3-2 in favor of Jacksonville.
Jacksonville wraps up their series with Nashville Sunday with first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m. The Jumbo Shrimp will turn to LHP Matthew Kent (1-2, 4.01), and the Sounds will counter with RHP Josh Lindblom (1-1, 2.33). Coverage begins at 12:50 p.m. on ESPN 690, ESPN690.com, and MiLB.tv.
