Elmira Jackals News Release
WHEELING, WV - Eleven different Jackals recorded at least one point in an explosive 7-4 victory over the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena. Jacob MacDonald recorded his first career hat trick in a four-point effort while Cason Hohmann posted four assists. Alain Valiquette made 30 saves winning his first professional start.
The Jackals jumped out quickly as Kyle Stroh potted the game's first goal at 5:18 of the opening frame. At the end of his shift, Stroh raced into the Wheeling end on the forecheck forcing a turnover and laying a pass into the high slot for Cason Hohmann walking in straight off the bench. Hohmann's shot was kicked aside right to Stroh for the put-back goal which was his eighth of the season. The Nailers answered at 8:21 as Riley Brace banked the puck in from below the goal line for his team-leading 19th goal of the season. Minutes later, Danny Fick followed the tying goal with a go-ahead marker at 11:34 for his third goal of the campaign.
Elmira took command in the second period and received a pair of goals from Jacob MacDonald to retake the lead. First, at 8:14 on the power-play, MacDonald blasted a one-timer from the point past Franky Palazzese to tie the game at 2-2. Spiro Goulakos fed MacDonald the set-up pass and received it from Cason Hohmann, who earned his second helper of the night on MacDonald's 11th goal of the season. Then, just over three minutes later, MacDonald fired another slap shot from the opposite point and beat Palazzese to give the Jackals a 3-2 lead at 11:53 of the middle frame. Cason Hohmann and Allan McPherson assisted MacDonald's second goal of the night and 12th of the season.
The Jackals padded their lead just 50 seconds into the third period as Matt Garbowsky banged home his fourth goal of the season assisted by Zach Cohen and Mark Bennett. However, the Nailers answered with a pair of goals for the second time and knotted the contest at 4-4. Adam Krause started Wheeling's comeback by forcing his 12th goal of the year past Valiquette and was followed by Jordan Kwas on the Nailers' lone power-play of the night as he put back a rebound for his fifth goal of the year, tying the game at 13:28 of the third period. But, the pesky pack steadied and responded with the go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner at 16:52. Nick Tuzzolino laid a backhand into the slot and the bouncing puck was tapped by Chris Langkow over to Spiro Goulakos who threaded the needle with a backdoor feed to Allan McPherson for his team-leading 17th goal of the season. The Jackals added to their lead just 45 seconds later as Mike Seidel went top shelf from a tight angle for his 13th goal of the campaign. Jacob MacDonald and Zach Cohen assisted Seidel's strike. As time was winding down, Justin Bernhardt found Jacob MacDonald and set him up for his first career hat trick with the empty net marker at 18:42. Cason Hohmann recorded his fourth assist of the night on MacDonald's 13th goal of the season.
Alain Valiquette stopped 30 of 34 shots faced to win his first professional start. Franky Palazzese allowed six goals on 31 shots faced and was handed the loss.
