Jackals End Wheeling's Five-Game Winning Streak
February 27, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- Saturday night's showdown between the Wheeling Nailers and Elmira Jackals was a scenario in which the last team to score won the game. With the contest deadlocked 4-4 in the final four minutes, it was Elmira who completed that task, lighting the lamp three times for a 7-4 victory at WesBanco Arena. Adam Krause upped his goal scoring streak to four games, while Cody Wydo registered at least one point for the eighth game in a row. The setback ended Wheeling's season-high five-game winning streak.
The Nailers faced a bit of adversity early, surrendering the first goal of the game, but were able to grab the lead before the opening period expired. Elmira's opening goal was scored by Kyle Stroh, who stole the puck behind the net, and fed Cason Hohmann on the right side of the slot. Hohmann's initial shot was stopped, but Stroh tapped in the rebound. Wheeling's answer came 3:03 later. Mathew Maione's drive from the right point got tipped wide of the net. Riley Brace pounced on the puck behind the goal, banking a shot off of Alain Valiquette and into the cage. A few minutes after that, the Nailers went ahead. Matt Tabrum poked a pass along the blueline to Danny Fick, who threw a long distance shot into the top part of the goal.
Unfortunately, the second period wasn't as smooth for the home team, as the Jackals scored twice to regain the lead. The tying tally came on the power play at the 8:14 mark. Spiro Goulakos set up fellow defender Jacob MacDonald, who wired in a one-timer from the top of the right circle. MacDonald struck for his second of the frame 3:42 later, when his shot from the left wing wall found its way through a maze of bodies and into the net.
Things began to turn around in a positive direction for Wheeling in the third period, as it battled back to tie the score. At the 7:39 mark, Riley Brace fed Adam Krause, who jammed a shot in on the right side of the crease. With 6:32 remaining, Jordan Kwas potted the equalizer, as he banged in the rebound of Mathew Maione's point shot on the team's lone power play of the evening. Despite the effort, the end result didn't go the way of the Nailers. Allan McPherson tapped in a cross-slot pass from Spiro Goulakos with 3:08 to go for the go-ahead goal, and Mike Seidel roofed a shot 45 seconds later for a two-goal advantage. MacDonald completed his hat trick and Elmira's 7-4 triumph with an empty net marker in the closing minutes.
Alain Valiquette won his first professional start for Elmira, making 30 saves on 34 shots. Franky Palazzese suffered just his second loss in his last nine games for Wheeling, as he fell victim to six goals on 31 shots.
The Nailers and Jackals will go to battle again on Sunday at 4:05. McDonald's presents $5 kids tickets, and there will be a post game skate with the team. A few other exciting upcoming promotions include Duck Dynasty Night on March 12th, and an appearance by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders on April 2nd.
