Lazo's Shorthanded Goal in Third Sinks Aces

LOVELAND, COLORADO - Johnny Lazo and Jesse Mychan each scored twice, and goaltender Kris Lazaruk stopped 22 shots as the Colorado Eagles stopped the Alaska Aces 5-2 Saturday at the Budweiser Events Center.

The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 6:57 mark of the first period on Ludwig Karlsson's stuff shot right in front of Aces goaltender Jacob Deserres. Assists to Jesse Mychan and Channing Boe. Then it was Mychan's turn to score his 24th goal of the season at 13:45. Helpers to Karlsson and Jake Marto.

Alaska showed its push-back in the second period. With Colorado's Marto off on a tripping penalty, the Aces used the entire two minutes to find the back of the net on a crisp shot from the lower right circle by Garet Hunt at 8:08. Ryan Tesink and Patrick Wellar earned assists.

Alaska tied the score on the lethal duo of Stephen Perfetto and Peter Sivak. Perfetto found Sivak at the top of the right circle and Sivak one-timed a bullet into the net. Also receiving an assist was Justin Breton. After being outshot 11-6 in the first period, the Aces led 16-15 after two.

The game-winning goal was an unassisted shorthanded tally by Johnny Lazo at 4:14 of the third period. Lazo knocked a puck loose at his own blueline and raced in on DeSerres, slapping a shot 5-hole for his 12th goal of the season.

Empty-net goals by Lazo at 18:50 and Mychan at 19:59 completed the scoring.

DeSerres finished with 20 saves for Alaska, while Lazaruk turned away 22 for Colorado,as the Eagles outshot the Aces 25-23 for the game.

Alaska now travels to Boise, Idaho for a three game series with the Steelheads Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of the coming week.

The Aces return to the Sullivan Arena on Friday, March 9 against Ft. Wayne.
