Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals laid claim to all six points available to them heading into the weekend, completing a three game sweep of Western Conference opponents with a 4-3 win over the Quad City Mallards Sunday before 3,541 fans at the Coach USA Center.
For the second consecutive night, Glenn Stewart scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Jackals, while Marco Emond picked up his third win in a row for the club. Mike Hofstrand (1-1), Randy Murphy (0-2), and Brad Wingfield (1-1) notched two point nights for the club as well to drive the scoring.
In the first period, Patrick Nadeau kicked things off at 14:26 on the power play, with assists from Jesse Rooney and Hugo Proulx. The lead, which turned out to be Quad City's only one of the game, was short lived. Stewart scored at 16:14 on the power play to tie the game at 1-1, with Murphy and Wingfield posting the helpers. The opening frame ended tied at 1-1, with Elmira out shot by Quad City 9-7.
Elmira opened up the second period with a power play goal 17 seconds in from Wingfield, with Stewart and Murphy assisting on the goal. Then the Jackals grabbed a 3-1 advantage with Mike Hofstrand's marker at 5:38 from Corey Neilson and Mike Thompson, the first even strength goal of the game. Quad City used a late power play to draw within one when J-F Dufour scored his third goal in two games against the Jackals from Tom Menicci and Dylan Mills at 18:56. The Mallards kept the momentum, but were unable to score again. By the end of the second period, Elmria was clinging to a 3-2 lead.
Quad City pressed hard to open the third, but at 2:21 Stewart's second goal of the game extended the lead to 4-2 and helped curb the Mallard attack. Hofstrand and Aaron Phillips assisted on the goal to give Elmira their two-goal cushion back. But the Mallards managed another tally off the stick of Nadeau at 5:02 to creep back to 4-3. Tony Lawrence picked up the only assist on the goal after stripping the puck from a Jackal defender and getting it to Nadeau, who buried it behind Emond. But for the rest of the way, and despite an empty Quad City net for the last 1:37 of the game, there would be no further scoring. Final shots on goal were Elmira 25, Quad City 33 for the game. The Jackals finished 2 for 4 on the power play, while Quad City went 2 for 6.
Elmira faces a busy week ahead of them, playing in Port Huron at 7:05 pm Tuesday night, heading back home to face Missouri on Thursday night at 7 pm. The Jackals will round out the weekend with a game in Glens Falls against the Adirondack IceHawks on Saturday at 7:30 pm. All games can be heard on your Home for Jackals Hockey, WiNGZ 104.9! Pre-game show with Tom Callahan starts one half-hour before faceoff.
