San Diego Gulls News Release
FRESNO, Calif. -- The San Diego Gulls can come home in second, third or fourth place, depending on what they can do against the Fresno Falcons at Selland Arena tonight.
San Diego is 2-2-1 so far on its six-game trip and is coming off two disappointing losses. The first came Saturday night when the Idaho Steelheads rallied from 3-0 and 5-3 deficits to win in a shootout. Last night Fresno spanked the Gulls, 8-3.
Games against the Falcons used to be a walk in the park for the Blue and Orange, but not lately. San Diego has lost four of six to Fresno this season, including a 0-3 mark at Selland Arena. The Gulls have lost their last six meetings in Fresno, dating back to last season and including the playoffs.
Trevor Koenig looks to right the ship for San Diego, getting them back on the winning track. Koenig is also looking for his 100th West Coast Hockey League win tonight. But to do it, he'll have to stop the second leading offense in the league.
Fresno comes into tonight with 146 goals, second only to the Idaho Steelheads. Kris Porter leads the Falcons' attack with 48 points, sixth in the WCHL. But the man San Diego may have to pay most of its attention to is Glen Gulutzan.
Gulutzan, who began the year behind the Fresno bench as the assistant coach, has had to lace up the skates again due to the rash of injuries the Falcons have suffered. All Gulutzan did last night was score four goals.
With a win, the Gulls guarantee themselves coming home in second place. With a loss, the Gulls could drop to fourth (if Bakersfield also defeats Anchorage tonight). If Fresno wins, they could climb all the way to the second spot.
All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
