Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â Glen Gulutzan became the fourth Falcon to score four goals in a single game this season as the Fresno Falcons trounced the San Diego Gulls, 8-3, on Tuesday at Selland Arena in front of a crowd of 3,240.
Fresno's Colin Embley led off the scoring with his 15th of the season at 5:46 of the first before Jason McBain slammed home his second tally of the year off a rebound to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead with 5:18 gone in the second. The game turned 180 degrees in a matter of seconds, though, after Clayton Read re-directed a Trevor Sherban shot for his 14th of the season and then added his second of the night just 20 seconds later at 7:05 of the second to tie the game at two.
After seeing their two-goal lead vanish, Fresno responded by ripping off three in a row over a span of 3:39. The Falcons took their second lead of the night two and a half minutes after Read's tying goal when Gulutzan beat San Diego goaltender Cris Classen with a wrist shot from between the circles. He tallied again on the power play at 11:06, and Drew Schoneck polished off a gorgeous cross-ice, backhand feed from Ryan Duthie with the clubs four-on-four at 13:06.
The Falcons began the third with a 5-2 lead and San Diego cut it to 5-3 after Dean Tiltgen knocked in a rebound at 7:08 of the final period. Fresno answered with yet another three-goal outburst to finish off the final half of the frame. Scott Borders tied Embley for the league's rookie goal scoring lead with his 15th at 10:07, Gulutzan blasted a slapper by Classen on the power play to complete the hat trick at 16:00, and the Falcons' all-time leading scorer capped the evening off with his fourth tally from right on the doorstep at 18:16.
The effort doubled Gulutzan's goal output this season, running his total to eight on the year, and he joined Kris Porter, Mike Barrie and Jason Weaver as Falcons this season that have scored four goals in a single game. Mark Gowan won his ninth consecutive decision in goal for the club after making 24 saves.
The victory moves Fresno to within a single point of both the Gulls and Bakersfield Condors, who lost 4-3 to the Anchorage Aces on Tuesday. The Falcons are 24-15-5 with 53 points, one point out of second place.
Fresno and San Diego battle one another again tomorrow night beginning at 7 p.m. It is Ladies Night at Selland Arena as prizes will be raffled off throughout the game to the ladies in attendance. The first 2,000 fans will also receive a World's Finest Chocolate candy bar. Tickets are available at the Selland box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
