Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
MEMPHIS -- Brock Peterson hit a two-run walk off home run in the 10th inning to lift the Memphis Redbirds to a 5-3 win over the Albuquerque Isotopes at Auto Zone Park.
It was Peterson's league-leading 18th homer of the season, and his fifth against the Topes this year. It ended a game that was delayed 42 minutes at the start by rain.
Fernando Salas (1-0) worked two scoreless innings of relief to get the win. Anthony Ortega (4-4) pitched a scoreless ninth, but served up the home run to Peterson on a 2-0 fastball.
Memphis (40-41) scored three runs, two earned, off Topes starter Rob Rasmussen. Rob Johnson singled home a run in the second. Relief pitcher Jorge Rondon ripped a double off the wall to score a run in the fourth. Thomas Pham delivered a two-out RBI single in the fifth for a 3-1 lead. Rasmussen allowed eight hits and two walks, throwing 108 pitches in five innings.
The Isotopes (44-37) didn't get a hit off Memphis starter Boone Whiting, but elevated his pitch count to 85 in 3 2/3 innings to chase him. Elevys Gonzalez greeted Rondon with an RBI triple in the fourth inning for the Topes first hit, tying the game at 1-1.
In the eighth, the Topes loaded the bases with one out against Mitchell Boggs. John Baker hit a grounder to first. Brock Peterson threw to second base for the first out, but nobody was close enough to first base for the return throw from shortstop Greg Garcia. Two runs scored on the play, tying the game at 3-3.
It was just the third win for Memphis this year in 13 games against the Isotopes.
Game two of the four-game series is Friday at 6:05 pm MT, Blake Johnson starts for the Isotopes, while the Redbirds hand the ball to Scott McGregor. Listen to all the action on 610 "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon the call.
