Tucson Padres Sweep Doubleheader Thursday

The Tucson Padres are sole possession of first place for the first time in team history after sweeping a doubleheader in Colorado Springs Thursday.

In the Padres 7-4 win in Game 1, Jose Gonzalez put the Sky Sox ahead 1-0 in the second with an RBI infield single. The Padres responded in the top of the third with two runs on Gregorio Petit's two-out double to take the lead. Colorado Springs tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third when Greg Golson was hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Tim Wheeler followed Golson with an RBI single to right to put the Sky Sox back in front 3-2.

The Padres rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth to regain the lead, 5-3. The first run came across on a passed ball, while the other two scored on Ben Francisco's two-out single. Colorado Springs got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on Charlie Blackmon's RBI double. Jonathan Galvez's sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot to left, extended Tucson's lead to 7-4.

Brad Brach (2-1) earned his second win after pitching 1.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Brandon Kloess. Colt Hynes struck out three of the five batters he faced in the final two innings to pick up his fourth save. C.J. Fick (1-2) was charged with the loss after yielding two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of relief.

The Tucson Padres completed the doubleheader sweep Thursday behind Gregorio Petit's three hits and two runs to defeat the Colorado Sky Sox 5-4 in Game 2. Petit went a combined six-for-eight with three RBIs in the doubleheader.

The Padres jumped ahead early with two runs in the top of the first on RBI hits from Dean Anna and Cody Decker. Anna's single extended his team-high hitting streak to 15 games. Ryan Wheeler answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the first to cut Tucson's lead to 2-1. Herman Iribarren tied the score at two in the second with an RBI single of his own. The Padres reclaimed the lead in the third on Brandon Allen's ninth home run of the season.

The Sky Sox knotted the score at three in the fourth on a Lars Davis RBI double and Ben Paulsen's two-out RBI single put Colorado Springs in front 4-3 in the fifth. Petit hit an RBI single in the sixth and later scored on a wild pitch to give Tucson a 5-4 lead.

Miles Mikolas closed out the bottom of the seventh, leaving the tying run at third, to secure the win and pick up his 16th save. Padres reliever Kevin Quackenbush (2-1) won his second game, while Mike McClendon (6-4) was the losing pitcher for Colorado Springs.
