Iowa Cubs News Release

Papillion, NE - Donnie Murphy hit a two-run homer, scored twice, and turned in a pair of stellar defensive plays to lead the Iowa Cubs (40-41) to a 4-2 victory over the Omaha Storm Chasers (35-45) at Werner Park tonight. The Cubs lead this series 1-0 and lead the season series 6-3. Memphis also won tonight, so the Cubs and Redbirds remain tied for first place in the American Northern Division.

Murphy got the Cubs on the board early with a two-run homer off Storm Chasers' starter Kelvin Herrera in the bottom of the first inning. Logan Watkins started the game with a walk and scored in front of Murphy's blast over the wall in right, his eighth homer of the year.

Herrera (0-1) worked only one inning in his first game with Omaha since getting optioned from Kansas City. Donnie Joseph allowed three singles in the second, but didn't give up a run. Yordano Ventura, tonight's originally scheduled starter for Omaha, took over in the third inning and allowed one run on four hits while walking five in four innings of work. The Cubs added a run in the fifth when Murphy doubled and scored on a base hit by Dave Sappelt.

Louis Coleman finished the final three innings on the mound and gave up the Cubs' final run in the ninth. With two outs, Brad Nelson legged out an infield single and was lifted for pinch-runner Brooks Raley. Raley advanced to second on a base hit by Sappelt and scored on a single by Junior Lake.

Cubs' starter Guillermo Moscoso (4-5) allowed two runs on four hits in six innings to post his third quality start, and earned his second straight win. Xavier Nady walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Max Ramirez in the fourth inning and Johnny Giavotella led off the sixth with a solo homer for the Storm Chasers' runs. Moscoso has won back-to-back starts for the first time this season.

Michael Bowden struck out four in two scoreless innings to set up Brian Schlitter for the save opportunity in the ninth. Schlitter nailed down the win to earn his sixth save and the game ended with Murphy throwing out Irving Falu at first after making a ranging play up the middle. The Cubs' bullpen has allowed just four runs in 32.2 innings over the team's last 13 games.

The Cubs and Storm Chasers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Werner Park. LH Chris Rusin (6-7, 3.41) will start for the Cubs against LH Justin Marks (1-8, 7.20) for the Storm Chasers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed at iowacubs.com, with the pre-game show starting at 6:45.
