Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Allentown, Pennsylvania (April 20, 2023) - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (9-11) took both ends of a doubleheader from the Worcester Red Sox (8-12) on Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park, taking game one 5-4 and game two 9-3.
Game One
Worcester jumped in front immediately in the first. David Hamilton belted a leadoff homer, his fourth of the season. A run scoring double play and RBI singles from Niko Goodrum and Greg Allen made it 4-0 after a half-inning of play
Lehigh Valley started their comeback in the third. Simon Muzziotti drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Jordan Qsar brought home two more with a double.
The IronPigs took the lead in the sixth. Back-to-back doubles from Esteban Quiroz and John Hicks tied the game. After a walk and flyout, Muzziotti came through with a single to score Hicks and give the IronPigs a 5-4 lead.
Francisco Morales (S, 1) stranded runners on the corners in the seventh to end the game and earn the save, firing a scoreless ninth to secure the 5-4 win.
Hans Crouse (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the IronPigs, going two no-hit innings, walking two and striking out three.
Brandon Walter (0-2) suffered the loss for Worcester, allowing five runs (two earned) in five-plus innings on six hits and a walk, striking out two.
Game Two
A constant offensive attack powered the IronPigs to the doubleheader sweep in game two. Vimael Machin stroked an RBI single in the first before Jordan Qsar belted a two-run homer, his fourth of the season, in the second.
Qsar drove in his third run of the game in the third with an RBI groundout.
Worcester plated three in the fourth as Daniel Palka drove in one with a fielder's choice and Ronaldo Hernandez brought in two with a base hit.
The IronPigs responded by stretching the lead. Machin picked up his second RBI single in the last of the fourth to make it 5-3. In the sixth, six straight two-out hits plated four runs with Dalton Guthrie driving in two with a triple and Qsar and Vito Friscia each collecting RBI singles to seal the 9-3 victory for the IronPigs.
McKinley Moore (2-0) collected the win in relief for the IronPigs. He went 1.1 scoreless frames, allowing a hit and two walks, striking out three.
Bryan Mata (0-2) took the loss for the WooSox, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks, striking out one, in 2.1 frames.
Following an off-day on Monday, the IronPigs hit the road to kick off a six-game series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Tuesday, April 25, at 11:05 a.m.
