IceMen Defeat K-Wings in Shootout
March 27, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - Prior to Wednesday night, six out of the 11 games between the Kalamazoo Wings (33-29-4-4) and the Evansville IceMen (24-40-2-4) were decided by a single goal, so it shouldn't come to any surprise that their final encounter of the season would be a 4-3 shootout won the IceMen.
After a scoreless opening period, Kalamazoo broke through in the scoring column 11:12 into the period with a tally from Yann Sauve (9th). Assisting on the goal were Alex Friesen and Aaron Clarke. The helper from Clarke extended his point streak to four games.
Crashing the net with less than two minutes remaining in the middle frame, Dustin Hopfner (1st) knocked in his own rebound to tie the game at 1-1.
Evansville took the lead midway in the third period with a goal from Olivier Gabriel (5th). Gabriel rushed up the left side of the ice, dipped his shoulder and wristed one past Joel Martin.
However, it would only take: 21 seconds for Kalamazoo to tie the game when Tyler Shelast (7th) earned his 100th career point by poking home a loose puck in front of the Evansville net.
Later in the period right off a face-off, Kalamazoo regained the lead with an Alexandre Grenier (8th) goal. John Armstrong, who won the draw, found Grenier at the top of the circle for the forward's eighth goal of the season.
Evansville would keep up the pressure as the period continued and earned a 5-on-3 power play late in the third to force overtime, as Dylan Clarke (23rd) capitalized on the advantage with 5:02 remaining in regulation.
The ensuing shootout only had one goal scorer as Patrick Kennedy netted the game -winner and sent the IceMen out with a 4-3 victory over Kalamazoo. The win was the IceMen's first win at Wings Stadium in six attempts (1-5-0-0) and extended the K-Wings home winless streak to four games (0-2-0-2).
Wrapping up a three-game home stand, as well as the home portion of their schedule, the K-Wings will host the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:30 p.m. on PNC Night and WRKR FANdaonium-Fan Appreciation Night, featuring a FANomenal Friday ($2 Beer, $2 Hot Dogs and $1 Pepsi Products).
