Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
Long Beach, Calif. - The Long Beach Ice Dogs scored three first period goals and never looked back in defeating the Phoenix RoadRunners 6-5 before 2,875 at the Long Beach Arena in ECHL action Friday.
Sean McAslan opened the scoring just 2:48 into the contest. McAslan collected his own rebound in the crease off of the centering pass from Mike Woodford and jammed the puck past RoadRunners goaltender Mike Mole to give the Ice Dogs (14-13-2) a 1-0 lead. McAslan then returned the favor when he found the streaking Mac Faulkner charging down the slot. Faulkner took the pass and fired a wrist shot past Mole at 13:08 for a 2-0 advantage. Ash Goldie closed the scoring with a two-man advantage power play goal at 16:05. Goldie beat Mole along the ice with a one-time slap shot from inside the left-wing circle to give the Ice Dogs a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The RoadRunners (9-16-2) would battle back with a pair of goals to start the second period to cut the deficit to 3-2. Jason Deskins got Phoenix on the board when he stripped a Long Beach defenseman of the puck, curled out to the left-wing circle, and beat Ice Dogs goaltender Greg Hewitt with a shot along the ice at 13:55. Brad Woods made it a 3-2 hockey game when he ripped a one-time slap shot over Hewitt's right shoulder at 18:39 on the power play. However, Long Beach would counter just 47 seconds later when off a RoadRunners turnover, Cory Urquhart found a wide open Kevin Ulanski at the weak side of the net, and Ulanski tipped the puck past Mole at 19:26 to make it 4-2 at the end of two periods.
Chris Kenady gave the Ice Dogs a three-goal lead just 1:03 into the third period when he caught Mole outside the cage and shot the puck from the right circle into the empty-net. Peter Trovato cut the lead to 5-3 at 4:20 when he sneaked a slap shot through Hewitt's pads off the face-off win by J-F Soucy. Urquhart made it a 6-3 game at 9:47 when he slapped one by Mole in the slot. Jake Riddle and Mike Ouellet got the RoadRunners to within a single tally with goals at 16:30 and 19:58 respectively, but Phoenix just ran out of time.
Phoenix out-shot Long Beach 40-31. Mole stopped 25 shots in falling to 5-12-2 on the season. The RoadRunners went 1-8 on the power play.
