Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (54-36) used three home runs to take game two over the Indianapolis Indians (42-49) by a score of 7-1, Wednesday at Principal Park.
As they did last night, Iowa started the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning, this time from David Bote. Up 1-0, they got another solo shot in the third off the bat of Yonathan Perlaza.
For Perlaza, it was his second home run in as many games and his 12th of the year. Iowa maintained their 2-0 lead, as Ben Brown kept the Indians off the board.
The No. 3 ranked prospect in the Cubs system spun five scoreless innings of one-hit ball, striking out nine of the 16 batters he faced. Iowa padded their lead in the fifth with their third home run of the game.
Nelson Velazquez clubbed a grand slam, growing Iowa's lead to 6-0. Bote struck again in the seventh, using an RBI double to push the I-Cubs ahead to 7-0. Indianapolis got on the board in the eighth with a solo home run from Aaron Shackelford, but that is all they would score, as Cam Sanders and Bailey Horn combined to throw a scoreless ninth inning.
POSTGAME NOTES:
Ben Brown bounced back in a big way, tossing five scoreless innings. The righty allowed just one hit while walking none and striking out nine. The outing earned him his fifth win of the year.
Each of the top four Iowa hitters collected a hit, as the four went 5-for-12 with five runs scored, a double, three home runs, seven runs batted in and three walks.
Luis Vazquez went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double hitting out of the eight-hole. It marked his seventh multi-hit game out of 16 games with Iowa, moving his batting average to .346 on the year.
Iowa and Indianapolis will play game three of the series tomorrow night, with first pitch from Principal Park scheduled for 6:38 pm. You can listen to all Iowa Cubs games on Hope AM940 and stream them for free on the Bally Live App. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
