
I-Cubs Shut Down Saints in Opener

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (53-65) won game one of the series against the St. Paul Saints (57-59) by a score of 7-1, Tuesday at Principal Park.
Iowa took a 3-0 lead through the first two innings with a sacrifice fly and a two-RBI double from Luis Vazquez. Up 3-0, Caleb Kilian went to work, throwing five scoreless innings.
The righty allowed three hits and two walks while striking out seven over his five innings of work, handing the ball off to Danis Correa. Correa threw two innings and allowed one earned run, but struck out five of the six outs he recorded.
Two more runs came across for Iowa on a sacrifice fly and a fielding error before Darius Hill recorded his second triple of the game, this time bringing in two runs.
Up 7-1, Brendon Little and Ben Leeper each threw scoreless innings, facing the minimum to earn Iowa their first win of the series.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Darius Hill went 2-for-4 with two triples and two runs batted in out of the leadoff spot. The outfielder not only extended his hitting streak to 10 games, but he also became the first Iowa Cubs player to record two triples in a single game since Matt Szczur back on July 18, 2015, against Memphis.
- Caleb Kilian earned his fifth win of the year, allowing just three hits and two walks over his five innings pitched. He struck out seven batters along the way.
- Iowa's pitching staff struck out 13 batters compared to allowing just five hits and three walks. They combined to throw 57% of their pitches for strikes.
