TOLEDO, OH - The Iowa Cubs (71-54) came out on top over the Toledo Mud Hens (60-67) thanks to a couple of long balls from Jared Young.
Iowa broke things open just two hitters into the game. Pete Crow-Armstrong got on base with a leadoff walk and Jared Young clubbed a two-run homer to give the I-Cubs an early 2-0 lead. The lead was quickly extended the very next inning.
With David Bote, Bryce Windham and Crow-Armstrong on base, Young smashed his second home run of the evening. This time, a 406-foot grand slam to give Iowa some extra run support, 6-0.
The Mud Hens lit up their side of the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Andre Lipcius picked up the RBI on a groundout as Tyler Nevin scored. The score stayed frozen at 6-1 with the I-Cubs in the lead for the next six innings.
Iowa tacked on one final run with a Matt Mervis bases loaded sacrifice fly in the ninth bringing the final to 7-1.
It was a bullpen day for Iowa, throwing six pitchers in the contest. Stephen Gonsalves went just 1.2 innings out of the starting spot. Chris Clarke carried the heaviest load completing 2.0 innings which earned him the win.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Young's grand slam was his first of the season and Iowa's sixth on the year. Their last grand slam came from Chase Strumpf on August 9 in Omaha.
- Gonsalves went 1.2 innings in his first start on the mound since July of 2021, it was his first career start with Iowa
- Young became just the fourth I-Cub to record six or more RBI this season, Luis Vázquez has recorded six and both Christopher Morel and Strumpf have had seven.
Iowa and Toledo will play game three of their six-game series tomorrow night, with first pitch from Fifth Third Field scheduled for 5:35 pm CT.
