Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Allentown, Pennsylvania - An early back-and-forth affair turned into a cruise to the finish as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (67-59, 31-22) toppled the Syracuse Mets (52-73, 19-32) by a final of 5-3 on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Park.
The IronPigs got instant offense in the last of the first, as Weston Wilson belted a lead-off homer, his 26th longball of the season.
Brandon McIlwain tied the game in the top of the second for the Mets, drilling a solo homer of his own.
Answering back in the bottom of the second, the IronPigs loaded the bases to start the frame. Simon Muzziotti then legged out a fielder's choice to bring in a run before Scott Kingery drove in a second with a sacrifice fly.
The Mets used the long ball again to tie the game in the third. This time, it was Daniel Palka crushing a two-run homer to knot the game at 3-3.
Lehigh Valley took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. Wilson singled to open the inning and Cristian Pache then walked. A wild pitch moved both into scoring position where Aramis Garcia put the IronPigs on top with a sacrifice fly, scoring Wilson.
Kody Clemens brought an insurance run across in the eighth, teeing off for a solo homer, his 12th of the season, to make it 5-3.
The IronPigs pitching staff was led by Drew Hutchison (4-3) who picked up the win, going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks, striking out three. Luis Ortiz (S, 5) fired a perfect ninth, striking out one for the save. Connor Brogdon, Ben Bowden, and Tyler McKay each tallied scoreless innings in relief.
Joey Lucchesi (6-5) suffered the loss for the Mets, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks, striking out five over five frames.
The IronPigs and Mets continue their series on Thursday, August 31, with first pitch slated for 6:45 p.m.
