Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (62-54) overcame an early three-run home run by the Las Vegas Aviators (67-49) to take the second game of the three-game series 4-3 on Thursday at Principal Park.
I-Cubs starter Adbert Alzolay spun 2.2 hitless frames before giving way to Craig Brooks with two runners on. Seth Brown smacked the first pitch from Brooks over the centerfield wall for the game's first hit and his PCL-leading 31st home run of the year. Alzolay was tagged for two of the three runs on the big fly. He collected five strikeouts and walked four batters in the shortened outing.
The I-Cubs began their comeback effort in the fourth inning with Addison Russell driving in Donnie Dewees after a single to cut the deficit to 3-1. In the fifth inning, Dewees did more damage, driving in a run to get the I-Cubs back within one.
On the mound, Iowa got a scoreless outing from Chih-Wei Hu in his organizational debut with the Cubs. Hu spun 3.0 frames, allowing one hit and five walks. Danny Hultzen followed with 1.1 scoreless innings to hold the deficit at 3-2.
The I-Cubs completed the comeback in the eighth. Robel Garcia started the drive with a one-out single and later scored the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly from Mark Zagunis. Phillip Evans, after reaching on a double, scored the game-winner on a Russell two-bagger.
Dillon Maples (W, 3-4) closed the game with a perfect 1.2 innings and fanned two to earn his third victory of the year.
