Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Las Vegas Aviators (67-48) scored five unanswered runs late in the game to capture an 8-6 edge over the Iowa Cubs (61-54), Wednesday at Principal Park.

Iowa managed to tally just one run in the first after loading the bags with no outs, but was able to double its score on a P.J. Higgins homer in the second. The Aviators broke through in the third as three-straight hits and a groundout turned out two runs for the visitors and a tie game.

Phillip Evans crushed a ball over the wall in left to open a three-run third for Iowa. After a double, Mark Zagunis later scored on a sacrifice fly and Higgins pushed in another with a single.

Las Vegas plated runs in each of the fourth and sixth frames to make it a one-run game, before a Sheldon Neuse pinch-hit homer tied it 5-5 in the eighth.

The Aviators pulled ahead in the ninth on a Corban Joseph RBI single and Skye Bolt sealed the deal with a two-run homer. Iowa took back a run in the bottom of the frame and proceeded to put runners on the corners with one out. A strike-em-out, throw-em-out ended the I-Cubs' threat and the game.

The first seven outs for starter Colin Rea went down on strikes as the righty ultimately fell one shy of a career high with 11 punch outs through 5.2 innings. Rea was one out short of a quality start as he allowed three runs on seven hits while walking just one.

Iowa's bullpen combined to allowed five earned runs through 3.1 innings. Newcomer Alex Wilson was tagged with three earned runs through 1.1 frames to take the loss.
