Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Dayton, OH - Kyle Lobstein pitched seven strong innings and Julio Cedeno paced a 13-hit attack to lead the Hot Rods to a 5-3 win over the Dayton Dragons on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field. The victory is the Hot Rods sixth straight over the Dragons in Dayton, sending the Reds affiliate to its 15th consecutive loss at home.
The Hot Rods opened the game with a run in the first inning, centering on outfielder Cody Rogers. The lead-off man pulled a double down the right field line to begin the inning. He took second on a groundout by Tyler Bortnick and then scored on another groundout from Brett Nommensen to give the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead.
After Dayton tied it in the second against Kyle Lobstein, Bortnick gave the Hot Rods another lead in the third. Ty Morrison began the frame with a bunt single to the starting pitcher Justin Walker. With one down, Morrison stole second and third before scoring on Bortnick's single to left field to bump the Hot Rods back on top, 2-1.
Dayton took its first lead in the bottom of the third, putting the lead-off man on with an infield single. Two outs later Cameron Satterwhite smashed a 3-2 pitch to deep left field to make it 3-2 Dragons.
From there, the starters took over with Walker and Lobstein each throwing scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth. As the staring contest continued into the sixth, Walker blinked first, issuing a one-out walk to Ryan Wiegand. Dustin Biell followed on the next pitch with a perfect hit-and-run single to right, leaving runners at the corners. That brought up Julio Cedeno, who laced a single into left field to tie the game at 3-3.
After a fly out to right field from Robi Estrada, Ty Morrison smacked a double into the right field corner, scoring Biell and Cedeno to put the Hot Rods on top 5-3. Morrison was thrown out at third on the play, trying to stretch a double into a triple that ended the inning.
Lobstein eventually worked his way through seven innings, tying his longest outing of the season. He allowed three runs, but gave up just one hit after the Satterwhite home run in the third. The lefty struck out five and didn't issue a walk for just the third time this season.
From there, Aaron Dott pitched a scoreless eighth before turning it over to Scott Shuman for the ninth. The flame-throwing right-hander gave up a couple of long fly balls but secured his 13th save of 2010.
The Hot Rods finished the night with 13 hits, the most since they smacked 13 on July 6 in Fort Wayne. Eight of nine starters had hits, led by Cedeno's three hit, one-RBI night. Bortnick, Nommensen, and Morrison all had two hits, each with a single and a double. Morrison also drove in two runs and stole two bases, raising his team-leading total to 36.
The Hot Rods try to make it seven straight wins in Dayton in game two on Thursday night as RHP Albert Suarez (0-4, 4.15) takes on Dayton RHP Tim Crabbe (2-2, 3.23). First pitch is at 6 PM CDT. You can follow the game with Tom Gauthier and Hank Fuerst at 5:45 PM CDT on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
