Debated Double Hands Game to Kernels

Clinton, IA - A tight pitcher's duel ended up hinging on a debated double by Justin Bass as the Cedar Rapids Kernels erased a one-run ninth-inning deficit and beat the Clinton LumberKings, 5-3 at Alliant Energy Field.

The LumberKings built a 3-1 lead thanks mostly to Daniel Carroll, who tied the game at one with a leadoff homer on the first pitch he saw from Kernels' lefty Tyler Kehrer. Carroll tripled to center to score Gabriel Noriega in the third inning and then later scored on a two-out double by Tim Morris.

That lead was trimmed to 3-2 when Kernels' catcher Drew Beuerlein lifted a solo home run into the Lumber Lounge in the seventh inning, but the Kings still held the advantage heading into the ninth.

That's when things started to turn for Cedar Rapids. With closer Brandon Josselyn on, Richard Cates lifted a flare single that found its way fair down the left-field line amongst three LumberKings' defenders. With Cates on the move, Bass lined a ball down the left-field line that appeared to be foul by mere inches, but was ruled fair by home plate umpire Ryan Goodman. The debated hit tied the score at 3-3.

Josselyn (L, 2-3) hit Jon Karcich and allowed a sacrifice bunt to Beuerlein, setting up a go-ahead two-run single by Terrell Alliman. Left-hander Jose Jimenez would come on to strand two, but the Kings suddenly found themselves behind 5-3 and in need of a late rally.

That rally would elude them. Kernels' closer Johnny Hellweg (S, 11) retired all three batters he faced, including a game-ending strikeout of James Jones.

The loss proved a waste of sharp outings from both starter Taylor Stanton and reliever Forrest Snow. Stanton limited the Kernels to a run on five hits over 6.0 innings while striking out a season-high eight, and Snow (H, 1) struck out five more over 2.0 innings in his Midwest League debut.

The win would end up going to Kernels' right-hander Mike Kenney (W, 3-2), who pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Kehrer gave up three runs over 7.0 innings and fanned six in the start for Cedar Rapids.

Carroll finished 2-for-4 with his eighth home run of the season, two runs scored and two RBI. Morris went 1-for-4 with the RBI double. Five of Clinton's seven hits were for extra-bases.

Every Kernel had at least one hit on the night, led by the 1-for-3, two RBI performance from Alliman.

The LumberKings (14-16) continue the three-game series against the Kernels (19-11) tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. Left-hander Jimmy Gillheeney (8-7, 2.85) makes his team-leading 21st start of the season. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
