Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Down to their final strike in the ninth inning, the South Bend Silver Hawks received a two-run homer from Ender Inciarte to beat the TinCaps, 4-3, Wednesday at Parkview Field. RHP Miles Mikolas had a stellar outing in relief for Fort Wayne.
The loss snapped the TinCaps' five-game winning streak. Inciarte, who entered the game batting .161 without a home run in 27 games, finished a double shy of the cycle.
South Bend took the lead in the top of the third. David Narodowski roped a one-out double, then Inciarte clubbed an RBI triple to right-center to put the Silver Hawks up, 1-0.
Jeudy Valdez drove in the tying run in the bottom of the third on a fielder's choice. The TinCaps took the lead in the fourth inning when Nate Freiman was hit by a pitch and Jedd Gyorko walked to open the inning. Edinson Rincon singled to center to drive in a run. Two batters later, Daniel Meeley blooped an RBI single to left-center to put the TinCaps ahead, 3-1.
The Silver Hawks threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with one out. Mikolas entered from the bullpen but fell behind in the count against speedster Keon Broxton. He managed to induce an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.
In the ninth, RHP Nick Schumacher walked leadoff batter Tyson Van Winkle. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, pinch runner Victor Estevez stood at third base with two outs. Inciarte fell behind in the count 1-2, but pounded a fastball over the right-field wall to vault the Silver Hawks into the lead, 4-3.
The loss spoiled a strong starting effort from RHP Matt Lollis, who went six innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He struck out eight without a walk.
Schumacher (3-6) took the loss; South Bend RHP Chris Odegaard (5-0) picked up the win to stay perfect. RHP Yonata Ortega grabbed the save, his 22nd of the year.
Fort Wayne dipped to 17-14 in the half, 53-48 for the season. The Silver Hawks improved to 12-18 in the second half, 42-56 for the year.
The TinCaps and Silver Hawks (Class-A Arizona Diamondbacks) continue the three-game series Thursday at Parkview Field at 7:05 p.m. Fort Wayne RHP Matt Jackson (1-1) draws his first start of the year against South Bend RHP Scottie Allen (3-3).
