
Cougars Fall in Opener with River Bandits

Davenport, Iowa. - The Kane County Cougars continued their struggles on the road with an 8-1 loss against the Quad Cities River Bandits. The Cougars only were able to gather 4 hits and 1 run, while stranding eleven runners on base. With a loss tomorrow Kane County is in jeopardy of dropping their third straight set, after winning six previous series in a row.
Chris Mederos (3-3) got the starting nod, and looked solid through his first three innings on the mound. He faced only one more than the minimum during those three frames, but struggled in the fourth. Mederos left after 3 1/3 innings and gave up 3 runs (2 were earned), and the suffered loss. Kenny Smalley (1-0) came in relief, but found trouble as well. Kenny through 2 innings, but gave up five runs to the River Bandits in the bottom of the sixth. The Cougars offense had their own issues. Kane County collected only four hits and struck out 14 times. Nine of them coming off of the winning pitcher Joe Kelly (6-6) who had a season-high nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Tyreace House scored the only run of the game for the Cougars in the top of the fourth.
The Cougars (17-14, 49-51) will continue the series with Quad Cities on Thursday at 7 CT with the second game of the three-game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits (20-9, 60-38). Dan Straily (7-7, 4.40) will be on the hill for the Cougars. Quad Cities will send Eric Fornataro (7-8, 4.51) to the mound.
