
Fourth rounder Max Russell joins Kernels; Garrett Richards to Rancho

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that LHP Max Russell has been promoted to Cedar Rapids from Orem and that RHP Garrett Richards has been promoted to Rancho Cucamonga. Abe Flores, Director of Player Development for the LA Angels, announced the move on Wednesday.
Russell was selected by the Angels in the fourth round of the 2010 Free Agent Draft out of Florida Southern College and is a native of Orange, CT. He's pitched in seven games at Orem, posting a 4-0 record and 3.41 ERA. In 31.2 IP, he's allowed 27 hits and 12 runs with three walks and 31 strikeouts. His last start was on July 26th, a home win vs. Helena, where he allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six in 5 IP.
Richards leaves the Kernels tied for the MWL lead in complete games with two. In 19 starts, he posted an 8-4 record and 3.41 ERA, allowing 92 hits and 48 runs (41 earned) with 34 walks and 108 strikeouts in 108.1 IP. He was selected by the Angels in the first round of the 2009 Free Agent Draft out of the University of Oklahoma.
With today's transactions, the Kernels roster remains at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with four players currently on the disabled list.
The Kernels continue a nine-game road trip tonight against the Clinton LumberKings at 7:00 pm, returning to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, July 31st. Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com, or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560. Ticket office hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday.
