Great Lakes Loons News Release
Loons Roll in Second Straight Shutout Team Loses Key Starter in Trade to KC LANSING, MI - Wednesday evening, the Great Lakes Loons won their second straight shutout game but midway through the contest they lost a key member of their starting staff to the Kansas City Royals.
Allen Webster (10-6) moved into sole possession of the league lead in wins with six shutout innings, teaming with Andy Suiter and Steve Ames for the Loons' 11th shutout win of the season, a 3-0 defeat of the Lansing Lugnuts.
The win follows a 5-0 blanking of Kane County Monday. The Loons scored two in the first and never trailed after that. Brian Cavazos-Galvez recorded a sac fly and J.T. Wise followed with an RBI single. Then in the fourth, Chris Jacobs brought home Brian Ruggiano on a double to center field.
Webster allowed just three hits in six innings with four walks and four strikeouts. Suiter fanned five in just two innings and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth. Ames hurled a scoreless ninth for his ninth save.
Cavazos-Galvez did not record a hit in the game, snapping his hitting streak at a franchise-best 24 games.
During the game, Loons pitcher Elisaul Pimentel, who was scheduled to start Thursday against Lansing, was informed of a trade sending him and Albuquerque catcher Lucas May to Kansas City for veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik. Pimentel is currently tied for the Midwest League lead in wins at 9-3 with a 3.49 ERA.
The Loons (68-32 overall, 25-6 second half) are still uncertain who will start Thursday's 7:05pm game in Lansing. The Lugnuts will send righty Ryan Tepera (9-4, 3.14) to the mound. He's tied for second in the league in wins and has the 10th best ERA. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and on Loons.com.
The Loons return to Dow Diamond Saturday night against Fort Wayne at 7:05pm. The game features a post-game fireworks Loontacular, powered by Dow Corning.
