Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back on Wednesday night, defeating the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers by the score of 8-3. The win, their third straight, improves the Chiefs to 13-16 on the second half of the season and 51-47 overall.
The Chiefs got on the board early off starter Maverick Lasker, putting the first runs of the game on the board in the second. Matt Cerda doubled before DJ Fitzgerald walked. Nelson Perez walked to load the bases and Luis Flores doubled to left to bring a pair of runs across and keep runners at second and third. Jae-Hoon Ha doubled down the line in left to score two more and give the Chiefs a 4-0 lead.
The Timber Rattlers got one back in the third off starter Ryan Searle. Cutter Dykstra led off and doubled to center, advancing to third on a fielding error by center fielder Matt Szczur. Cameron Garfield grounded out to Logan Watkins to bring Dykstra home and make it 4-1.
The Chiefs added to their lead in the fifth. Watkins walked but was out at second on a fielders' choice off the bat of Szczur. On the play a throwing error by Scooter Gennett allowed Szczur to reach second base before he scored on a Justin Bour double to push the Peoria lead to 5-1.
The Chiefs lead continued to grow in the seventh off reliever Caleb Thielbar. Szczur singled and advanced to third on a Bour double. Cerda singled to center to score both runs and advanced to second on the throw home. An error on the throw allowed him to reach third and a throwing error on an attempt to throw him out at third allowed him to come home on the play, making it 8-1.
Wisconsin got one back in the eighth inning off reliever Manolin De Leon. Michael Marseco doubled down the line in right field before Kentrail Davis singled to left. The Rattlers sent Marseco home on the play and he just beat the throw from Perez to cut the lead to 8-2.
The Rattlers scored again in the ninth off reliever Corey Martin, but fell short in their comeback bid. Hunter Morris led off with a home run to right field. Cutter Dykstra singled and advanced to second on a two-out single by Marseco. With the Rattlers threatening to add more Martin got D'Vontrey Richardson to ground out to third to secure the 8-3 victory.
Searle (5-5) pitched six innings and gave up one unearned run on five hits while striking out four. De Leon threw two innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out four. Martin pitched the final inning and gave up on run on three hits while striking out one.
