About Last Night... The Hot Rods and Burlington Bees locked horns in a pitcher's duel for the second consecutive night. Joe Ryan set the tone early, striking out the first four Bees hitters and retiring the first ten men. Bowling Green took the early lead in the second inning as Grant Witherspoon scored when Burlington starter Kyle Tyler threw away a comebacker to give the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead. Ryan held the lead through 6.0 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 11 batters. Burlington tied the game off of Nick Sprengel in the seventh on an RBI double by Alexis Olmeda. In the eighth, Ford Proctor lined a one-out solo homer to break the deadlock. Grant Witherspoon lined a two-out, two-run triple to extend the league to 4-1, which proved crucial when D.C. Arendas lined a two-run homer in the ninth. The Hot Rods would shut the door, though, holding on for a 4-3 win to even up the series.

Moving On Up... After a stellar start to the season, Michael Plassmeyer was promoted to Class-A Advanced Charlotte, the first Hot Rod to earn such a promotion this season. The southpaw went 2-1 with a 1.23 ERA in five starts. He struck out 32 and walked just seven 29.1 innings. He ranks fourth in the Midwest League in ERA and is sixth in the league with a 0.95 WHIP. To fill his roster spot, RHP Shane Baz was reassigned to Bowling Green from Extended Spring Training.

About the Baz... 21-year-old Shane Baz is a former first-round pick (12th overall, 2017 MLB Draft) of the Pittsburgh Pirates who was acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh on August 14, 2018. He was a player to be named later in a July 31 transaction that sent Chris Archer to the Pirates. Baz is the 10th-ranked prospect in the Rays' system according to MLB Pipeline and the 11th-ranked Rays prospect by Baseball America.

More Awards... After Wander Franco was named Midwest League Player of the Week last week, pitcher Caleb Sampen captured MWL Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of April 29-May 5. Sampen earned the award after pitching 7.0 shutout innings against Peoria on Friday, May 3, allowing just one hit (a first-inning single), while striking out eight and retiring the final 19 batters he faced in a no-decision. He is the the 11th Hot Rod to earn the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week award and first since Resly Linares last season.

Checking in on a Streak... Michael Smith extended his on-base streak to 17 games (20 games including last season) with his ninth-inning walk on Monday night. The outfielder has reached base in all 17 games he has appeared in this season, thanks in large part to his .438 on-base percentage, The 17-game stretch this season is tied for the fourth-longest on-base streak in the MWL this season and is the second-longest active streak.

Yesterday's Notes... Ryan's 11 strikeouts are the second-most by a Hot Rods pitcher this year, behind Ryan's 12 strikeouts on April 17th vs. Lake County...Witherspoon collected his eighth multi-hit game and his fourth multi-RBI game of the season...Kaleo Johnson had his sixth multi-hit game...Bowling Green improves to 5-4 in one-run games...The Hot Rods improved to 15-7 in games against a right-handed starter...BG is also 13-12 at night this season...The Hot Rods are 10-5 when they score first...Bowling Green is 19-9 all-time against Burlington, 10-3 at Bowling Green Ballpark...
