Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio - Bren Spillane's two-run home run highlighted a seven-run fifth inning as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Clinton Lumber Kings 9-5 on Wednesday night. The season's largest crowd, 8,864, saw the Dragons earn their second straight series victory as they won two-of-three from Clinton.

The seven-run fifth was the most productive inning of the year for the Dragons. The club also posted its biggest comeback of the season, winning after trailing by three runs for the first time.

Clinton opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning and then added one more in the second to extend their lead to 3-0. But Dragons starting pitcher Ricky Salinas recovered and tossed three straight scoreless innings as his club started its comeback.

The Dragons scored two runs in the third on a pair of wild pitches and then exploded in the fifth. Miguel Hernandez got the rally started with a base hit to right field and advanced to second on a double down the right field line by Jonathan Willems. After Juan Martinez walked to load the bases, Mariel Bautista drilled a two-run single to left to give the Dragons a 4-3 lead. After Shard Munroe walked to re-load the bases, Jay Schuyler hit a spinning ground ball off the glove of the first baseman into right field that brought in Martinez and Bautista, and when Schuyler raced to second, drawing the throw, Munroe scored as well to make it 7-3. Schuyler was credited with a double and two runs batted in. Spillane followed with a two-run home run to left field to make it 9-3. The homer was Spillane's fourth of the year and second in the last three games.

Clinton scored single runs in the seventh and ninth innings to close out the scoring.

Salinas (1-0) became the first Dayton hurler to reach double-digits in strikeouts this season when he fanned 10 in five innings to earn the win. Salinas allowed three runs on eight hits with two walks. Jerry D'Andrea replaced Salinas to start the sixth. He worked one and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Connor Bennett was the third and final Dayton pitcher, going two and one-third innings. He allowed one unearned run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

The Dragons finished the night with eight hits. Bautista went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs. The nine-run total was the highest for the Dragons since April 19 when they scored nine at Lansing.
