Bees Fall Short in Comeback, Lose 4-3 to Bowling Green
May 8, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Well almost. Catcher Alex Olmeda tied the game in the seventh with a two out double, scoring Bees left fielder Spencer Griffin. Griffin had reached on an infield single earlier. He went to second on an errant pick-off throw. Game tied 1-1 in the seventh inning.
When losing pitcher Luis Alvarado entered in relief for the Bees in the bottom of the sixth inning, home plate umpire Ben Rosen immediately threw his glove out of the game. Illegal color was the call. An omen perhaps of how his night might go, as Alvarado gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth, allowing Bowling Green to take a 4-1 lead. Just as was the case the night before, Burlington was not done.
With two out in the top of the ninth, Olmeda singled to left, his second hit of the night. Designated hitter D. C. Arendas followed by driving the first pitch he saw over the wall in right, and the Bees were right back in it 4-3. It was Arendas' second home run of the year. The runs batted in were his seventh and eighth. That is how it ended though when First baseman Connor Fitzsimons grounded out to third.
The first six innings of this battle was a classic pitching duel between starters Kyle Tyler for Burlington and Joe Ryan for Bowling Green. Tyler went five innings. He was stellar in giving up just an unearned run, two hits and three free passes. He struck out three. Hot Rods' right hander Ryan threw six innings, also allowing two hits, no runs and no walks. He struck out 11 Burlington hitters. Neither would figure in the decision when the Bees tied the game in the seventh.
