High Scoring Teams Play Low Scoring Affair, Saints' Six-Game Win Streak Snapped in 3-2 Loss to I-Cubs
July 4, 2023 - International League (IL)
St. Paul Saints News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The St. Paul Saints entered play tied for third in the International League in runs scored. The Iowa Cubs were second. In their 12 games at CHS Field they combined to score 157 runs. So, of course, in their first game at Principal Park the two teams would combine for just five runs on nine hits. The Saints, unfortunately, came up on the short end as their six-game winning streak was snapped in a 3-2 loss.
The Iowa Cubs grabbed the lead in the first when Yonathan Perlaza walked, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on an RBI double by Matt Mervis making it 1-0.
Gilberto Celestino tied the game in the second with a solo homer to left, his second of the season.
The I-Cubs grabbed the lead with a long ball of their own in the fourth. Mervis led off with a double and with one out Edwin Rios hit a two-run homer to center, his second of the season, making it 3-1. Saints starter Randy Dobnak went 4.0+ innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three.
Trevor Larnach gave the Saints a chance in the ninth when he blasted a 446-foot solo homer to right, his third straight game with a homer and seventh of the season, getting the Saints to within 3-2. Celestino followed with a walk, but Chris Williams struck out to end the game.
The Saints managed just three hits on the night. Outside of the two home runs, Austin Martin collected his first Triple-A hit with a double in the sixth inning. The Saints had three other base runners, two walks to Celestino and an Anthony Prato hit by pitch.
Saints' reliever Ronny Henriquez went 2.0 scoreless innings allowing one hit while walking two and striking out two while Patrick Murphy went 2.0 shutout innings allowing one hit while walking three and striking out three.
The same two teams meet in game two of the six-game series on Wednesday night at 6:38 p.m. The Saints send RHP Aaron Sanchez (4-4, 5.40) to the mound against I-Cubs RHP Riley Thompson (2-5, 5.74). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
