Louisville Bats News Release
TOLEDO, OH - Henry Ramos put the Louisville Bats (42-38) on the board early, but ultimately fell short, losing 7-3 to the Toledo MudHens (36-45) on 4th of July at Fifth Third Field.
Henry Ramos got the Bats in front early, scoring runs in the opening frame of the game. Alejo Lopez and Christian Encarnacion-Strand drew walks to start the inning before the pair pulled off a double steal to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Ramos promptly followed with an RBI double down the third base line to score both runners and put Louisville in the lead, 2-0.
Toledo would answer in the following inning, scoring two runs of its own before adding on a single run in the third to take the lead, 3-2.
The MudHens tacked on another run in the fifth before the Bats rallied for a run in the top of the sixth. With one away, Jose Barrero drew a walk before moving to second on a wild pitch. Jhonny Pereda drew a walk of his own, followed by a Barrero steal of third to set the table for Nick Martini who roped an RBI double into left field to score the run from third and cut into the deficit, down 4-3 after six.
Once again, Toledo answered with runs of its own, scratching a run in the seventh and two in the eight to go up four, taking a 7-3 lead into the ninth.
Louisville threatened in the final frame of the game as Barrero and Pereda singled with two outs, but the threat would come to pass as the Bats dropped game one of the series to Toledo on Tuesday night.
The Bats tied a team season-high with five stolen bases in the game, a feat they achieved for just the second time this season.
Louisville and Toledo will play game two of the series tomorrow night, Wednesday, July 5th. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm E.T. as right-hander Connor Phillips (0-0, 10.80) will make his second career start with the Bats, taking on fellow righty Bryan Sammons (0-1, 5.95) for the MudHens.
