South Carolina Stingrays News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays announced today the addition of three players to the roster for the 2006-2007 season. Defensemen Marc Busenburg and Donny Grover along with forward Brendan Bernakevitch have been sent down from the Hershey Bears, the AHL affiliate of the Stingrays.

Busenburg, 28, will begin his sixth year of professional hockey when he joins the Stingrays on the ice this month. The Shrewsbury, MA native played four years of college hockey at the University of Connecticut before joining the Adirondack IceHawks of the UHL in 2000. Busenburg, at 6'1", 190-pounds, has spent his career primarily in the AHL, including two years with the Hershey Bears. Last season, Busenburg played overseas in Germany.

"Busenburg is a great two-way defenseman," noted head coach Jason Fitzsimmons. "He will bring a level of experience that is essential for our young team."

Grover, 23, hails from Rockland, MA. The 6'1", 196-pound defenseman graduated from Northeastern University in 2004 and in the same year played six games for the Quad City Mallards of the UHL. Grover split his time last season between the Danbury Trashers of the UHL and the Lowell Lock Monster of the AHL scoring 42 points between the two teams.

"Grover had a stand-out rookie year last season," said Fitzsimmons. "He put up strong numbers in the UHL and AHL and we're looking for him to do the same for us this season."

Bernakevitch is the third player sent down to the Stingrays from Hershey. The 24-year-old native of Regina, Saskatchewan will begin his second year of professional hockey. The 6'1", 205-pound forward played four years of college hockey at Harvard before playing with the Manchester Monarchs and the Houston Aeros last season.

"We expect big things to come from having Brendan on board this season," commented Fitzsimmons. "He played well at the AHL level last year and will be a great fit for us here in South Carolina."

The puck drops on the 14th season of hockey in the Low Country at Gwinnett on October 20, but returns to home ice on October 21 when the Rays take on the Columbia Inferno.
