
Vellinga Invited to Training Camp

COLUMBIA, S.C. (October 4, 2006) - Head Coach Troy Mann has announced that defenseman Mike Vellinga has accepted an invitation to training camp for the 2006-07 season.
The 28-year-old Chatham, Ontario native played in 64 regular season games for the Long Beach of the ECHL last year, scoring three goals and 14 assists for 17 points while recording 69 penalty minutes. Vellinga also played in seven playoff games for the Ice Dogs, notching one goal and two assists for three points and eight penalty minutes.
"Mike is an established defenseman at our level and we are looking for him to provide solid play at both ends of the rink," said Coach Mann. "His combined +17 in 2005-06 and +23 in 2004-05 certainly demonstrate his ability to contribute to his team."
The 6'2, 212-pound Vellinga has played in 441 games during his seven-year ECHL career, netting 25 goals and 116 assists for 141 points while tallying 675 penalty minutes. Vellinga has also appeared in 39 career ECHL playoff games, potting two goals and 10 assists for 12 points while recording 64 penalty minutes. Prior to turning professional, Vellinga played 186 regular season games for Guelph of the Ontario Hockey League, scoring 15 goals and 60 assists for 75 points while sitting for 206 penalty minutes. In 46 career playoff games for the Storm, Vellinga had four goals and 23 assists for 27 points and 68 penalty minutes.
