Wheeling Nailers News Release
DAYTON, OH - Adam Henrich's goal 1:32 into overtime ended a 3-2 win for the Wheeling Nailers over the Dayton Bombers Saturday night at the Nutter Center. In his first start as a Nailer, goaltender Terry Denike stopped 26 shots in his return to Dayton to earn the win.
The Nailers have now won three games in a row and are 6-3-1 on the season. With the loss the Bombers fall to 5-4-2-1.
Despite being outshot 14-6 in the first period, the Nailers remained in a scoreless tie through the first. Aaron Boogaard picked up his third goal in the last three games by banging in a rebound on a shot from Kyle Rank just 1:43 into the second.
The lead stood until 16:08 of the frame when Masahito Nishiwaki scored on an assist from Yannick Tifu.
With the score tied at one through the first 15 minutes of the third period, Rank notched his fourth of the year to give Wheeling a late lead. On the power play, Sean Collins danced his way into the Bombers zone and fed Paul Bissonnette at the center point. Bissonnette put a pass right on the stick of Rank for the tap in at 15:06.
Curtiss Patrick's minor with 1:54 remaining in regulation gave the Bombers a 6-on-4 advantage with the goalie on the bench. That set up Taylor Christie on a shot from the point that was tipped under Denike by Tifu to tie the game with 37.6 seconds remaining.
In overtime it was another power-play goal that decided it. With Matt Beaudoin in the box for boarding, Bissonnette set up near the blue line with a 4-on-3 advantage. His wrist shot was tipped by Henrich underneath Jeremy Duchesne to end the game.
Denilke earned the win just 11 days after being placed on waivers by the Bombers. The Nailers were outshot 28-27 making it their second win when being outshot.
The Nailers return to the ice on Tuesday at 7:30p.m. to make up their game rescheduled from Friday night in Cincinnati. It begins a stretch of five games in six days for Wheeling as they return home on Wednesday for a rematch with the Bombers. The game starts at 7:05p.m. and tickets are buy one get one free when you show your WesBanco debit card at the box office.
