Inferno beat Lynx 5-1
November 17, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Columbia Inferno News Release
Less than 24 hours after scoring two goals against the Augusta Lynx, Inferno captain Brad Ralph netted another pair of goals to lead Columbia (6-6-1-1, 14 points) to a 5-1 victory over the visiting Lynx (6-6-0-1, 13 points) in the second game of a home-and-home series.
Ralph nabbed the game's first goal three minutes into the first when he slipped the puck past Augusta goalie Nathan Marsters for his ninth goal of the season.
The Lynx tied the game 1-1 just two minutes into the second period when center Aaron Slattengren beat goalie Todd Ford for his seventh goal of the year. It would be the only puck of the day that would get past Ford.
Newly acquired winger Liam Huculak scored his first goal of his ECHL career in his first game at the Carolina Coliseum when Ralph's glove-side wraparound attempt trickled to Huculak. The bruising winger wasted no time smacking the puck into the empty net on Marsters' blocker side at 14:02 of the second period.
The Inferno took a 3-1 lead 7:39 into the third period when winger Owen Fussey's fourth goal of the season squirted past Marsters on a wraparound attempt. Winger Daniel Sparre, nursing a left eye injury sustained the previous game, extended the lead 4-1 at the 10:54 mark when he picked up the puck at the red line, danced through defenders and deked Marsters to the ice. He put the puck past Marsters right leg for his ninth goal of the season. Ralph capped off the game's scoring when Huculak fed him a puck from the low corner. The Inferno captain was camped out in the crease and backhanded the puck up and over Marsters glove-side shoulder.
"Brad has obviously been great from game one on, but today he really took charge," Inferno coach Troy Mann said. "This was a must-win game in our division, and Brad led our team to victory."
Ford finished with 30 saves on 31 shots while Marsters turned aside 27 of 32.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum Thursday, Nov. 29 to host the Charlotte Checkers. Group tickets, fundraisers and the coolest birthday parties in town are all available by calling 803.256.7825 or by logging on to the all-new columbiainferno.com.
