Florida Rides Power Play to 4-2 Win Over Stingrays

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays entered tonight's contest against the Florida Everblades looking to bounce back from a tough loss last night to Gwinnett. Unfortunately they ran into many of the same problems that plagued them in Georgia, and fell by a score of 4-2 at the North Charleston Coliseum.

"I thought we worked hard and played pretty well tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "The biggest difference was the special teams, both on the power play and the penalty kill."

Like last night against the Gladiators, the Stingrays gave up three power play goals to the Everblades. The first came in the first period from Mathieu Melanson, his 7th goal of the season. Not long after, they doubled their lead on a 5 on 3 goal by Derek Damon, his 8th goal of the year.

Damon struck again in the 2nd period, and would finish the night with 2 goals and 2 assists, getting involved in all 4 Everblade goals. The score would remain 3-0 after 2 periods of play, with the Stingrays in desperate need of a goal to start out the third.

They got that goal, from Tim Judy, at 3:00 minutes of the third period, to cut the lead to 3-1. The goal was assisted by Travis Morin and Chris Chaput. For Judy it was his 2nd goal of the season. But the Rays would give up another power play goal less than 6 minutes later, when Ernie Hartlieb notched his 7th goal of the season.

Still showing heart, down 4-1, South Carolina grabbed another goal, this one on the power play, by Cail MacLean. The goal was assisted by Andrew Andricopoulos and Chaput, and was MacLean's 3rd goal of the season.

Even after pulling their goaltender, Josh Johnson, for the extra attacker, the Rays were unable to score again, and fell by a final of 4-2.

The losing goaltender was Johnson who made 34 saves on 38 shots. The winning goaltender was Tyler Plante who stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced. The Stingrays went 1 for 5 on the power play, while killing off 4 of 7 short handed situations. The Rays fall to 7-5-1-0 on the season.

South Carolina will be back in action Wednesday night as they welcome the Charlotte Checkers back into the North Charleston Coliseum for the second time this season. In their 2 previous meetings, the Stingrays are 1-1. Game time will be at 7:05.
