Blades power their way to 4-2 win over South Carolina

CHARLESTON, SC - The Florida Everblades (8-5-0) used a total of 10 points from the line of Derek Damon, Ernie Hartlieb and Mathieu Melanson, and three power play goals to upend the South Carolina Stingrays 4-2 on Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum in front of a crowd of 5,972. The win allowed the Everblades to end their four-game road trip with a 2-2-0 mark.

The Everblades got off to a quick start scoring a pair of first period power play goals to grab a 2-0 lead after one period. Everblades rookie forward Mathieu Melanson extended his point scoring streak to six games when he wristed home a pass from the bottom of the left circle past South Carolina goaltender Josh Johnson at 11:52. Ernie Hartlieb and Derek Damon collected the assists on the tally.

The Everblades then opened a two-goal lead late in the first period while enjoying a 5-on-3 power play. Damon scooped up a rebound at the top of the crease and chipped home his team-leading eighth goal of the season with 1:17 remaining in the period. Melanson and David Cornacchia earned assists on the play.

The second period was dominated by the Everblades who out-shot the Stingrays 17-10 in the frame and tacked on another goal to open a 3-0 lead. Just past the midpoint of the second period Damon collected his second goal of the night after cutting through the right circle and getting a shot away as he was getting tripped up that slipped past Johnson and into the net at 13:23. For the second time, Hartlieb and Melanson teamed up on the goal to pick up the assists on Damon's ninth goal of the year.

The Stingrays came out strong in the third period and tallied a quick goal three minutes into the frame when Tim Judy jammed home a rebound at the right post trim the Everblade lead to 3-1. The Everblades responded just before the mid point of the period when Hartlieb collected the team's third power play goal of the night at 8:44 when his stuffer attempt at the left post snuck between the pads of Johnson. Damon and J.D. Forrest assisted on Hartlieb's seventh goal of the season. South Carolina closed out the scoring late in the third period when Cail MacLean notched a power play goal for the Stingrays at 16:08 to cut the Everblades lead to 4-2.

Everblades goaltender Tyler Plante took care of the rest, turning away 15 of 17 shots in the third period and a total of 33 shots to improve his record to 3-2-0 on the season. Johnson suffered the loss in net for the Stingrays allowing the four goals on 38 shots to see his record fall to 4-4-0.

On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 3-for-7, while the Stingrays finished 1-for-5.
