
Heat Snip Stars 3-2 in a Shootout

Cedar Park, TX - The Texas Stars (6-5-0-1, 13 points) were defeated by the Abbotsford Heat (9-4-1-0, 19 points) 3-2 in a shootout in front of 5,393 fans at the Cedar Park Center on Friday night. The Heat scored twice in the last five minutes of regulation, including a game-tying goal with 47 seconds remaining to force overtime. The Heat went on to win the shootout 3-0 over Texas. Abbotsford defenseman Brendan Mikkelson scored his team's first goal and set up the game-tying goal. Stars' center Travis Morin added two assists, while left wing Matt Fraser netted his ninth goal of the season. Right wing Ray Sawada also scored for Texas, as the Stars saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Texas goalie Richard Bachman (3-3-1) stopped 20 of 22 shots in the shootout loss. Abbotsford goalie Leland Irving (9-4-0) stopped 34 of 36 shots in the victory. The Stars take on the Abbotsford Heat on Saturday, November 12th at 6:00 P.M. at Cedar Park Center.
After a scoreless first period, Texas got on the board at 17:48 of the second period. Left wing Matt Fraser fired a shot past Irving, giving Texas the1-0 lead. His ninth goal of the season was set up by defenseman Philip Larsen and center Travis Morin.
Texas added to its lead at 5:23 of the third period. Right wing Ray Sawada registered his fourth goal of the season as the puck trickled into the back of the net. Fraser and Morin each provided an assist on the 2-0 score. Abbotsford notched their first goal of the night at 15:56 with a power-play goal by defenseman Brendan Mikkelson. Right wing Jon Rheault and left wing Greg Nemisz helped set up the goal to cut Texas' lead to 2-1. The Heat tied the game 2-2 with 47 seconds left in regulation. Left wing Raitis Ivanans scored the game-tying goal with an assist from Mikkelson.
Both teams skated to a scoreless overtime to force a shootout. Abbotsford forwards Ben Walter, Jon Rheault and Dustin Sylvester scored on three of four Heat attempts. Leland Irving stopped all three Texas shooters to secure the win.
Texas concludes its Stars and Stripes Weekend at the Cedar Park Center on Saturday November 12th, presented by Sport Clips. The Military Appreciation themed weekend will feature specialty jerseys worn by the Stars. The team will wear the red-white-blue colored jerseys for Saturday's game. A silent auction will be held on the concourse of the Cedar Park Center for fans to purchase the game-worn jerseys. The silent auction begins on Friday and ends after the second intermission on Saturday, November 12th.
On Saturday, November 12th, the Stars host Abbotsford at 6:00 P.M. The first 2,500 fans through the gate receive a Stars and Stripes Hat, compliments of Sport Clips. Saturday is also a State Farm Family Four Pack night (4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 sodas starting at $48). On Sunday, November 13th, the Stars travel to the AT&T Center to take on the San Antonio Rampage at 3:30 P.M.
